THE “JOURNAL.1 Two years bjjo, owing to _ pur then in- creased advertising patronage, tlxo size of the J o u rn a l was changed from a six^col- umn to a seven column quarto.; A t^ th a t time, in making the announcement, among other reflections indulged in , it was stated “that it was hoped that the seven column paper would be continued, but that it would all depend upon the patronage re- ceived,” and furtherf“ that i f the local support was not enough to cover the in crease in expense that a return to such size as could afforded Would be made,” &c., &c. It is w ith regret that we have to an- nounce this week that we are compelled from the circumstances to go nack to the former size. Our local support, and we mean b y this the' support which the paper receives in the village in which it is issued does not warrant even the size paper that is now given tb the readers of the Jour nal. Its conductors do uot speak of this in any fault-finding spirit. I t is a t- tributable to the fact that as a business center there has been a gradual falling away hero for several years—not at once. pparent to the general public, but fully Understood by those following the business o f publishing a weekly newspaper. Pos- sibly this state o f things w ill change after a time. We trust that it may, but we have great fears as to the probability o f this,- Stranger things may happen than that some fine day nO newspaper w ill be issued from, this village. To te ll the truth, i t the Jo u r n a l had to rely entirely upon its local sup- port it woqld have to move quick time. However, it is a satisfaction t.o state that i t has a sufficiently large number of pay- ing subscribers'to sustain, i t in its present work, and While this shall continue we shall do our best to give our readers a newspaper in every way equal to anything lh a t'it has been in the past. We reiterate the fact as: stated b y us when the enlarge- ment o f 1887 was made, that our subscrip- tion patronage has s:eadily increased since 1883, when the change Was made to the quarto form. The Jour nal reaches many hundred more readers now than then, or a t any former time in its history. 5 . - W hile this \is so, and we canwithieasOu: A ja. S - M .- m Ak*wk ■0 .
