It was midnight \ but the dree t9 were fo illuminated that a pin might have been difeerned^ f he impregnated wa ter was no fooner thrown in, than all was darknefs apd frr*cke; the fifc was completely exrmguiftied. \ On an other occafion afterwards, ^rhen the New Suga<f Houf’‘ on fire, the fame applic^ition dmad€, though late a3 in the fom cf cafe, and not until confiderable fors wa^fudHined, aiKfWith lims fuccefsthe lire was fubdued, and much rcmafning.ptO** perty prcfciYcd. The W'Otkmen at this kft place who had taken homt fome of the brok en wood for fuel, were not a little furprized to find that ii would not burn. It had ali, more or lefs, got a dafii of alkaline water. That the public may fee what a fimplc pro* cefs it is, I will mentiou the method adopt ed on thefooccafions. At one end of the Fire Engine a large tub was placed, ii to which all the water was \thrown; and from it, by two men, one oo each fide with buckets, the engine was fup- •plied. To the tub was attached a barrel of fweated American Pot-alh, and put under the charge of one man, v/ho by handfulls continued liberally to throw the. alhes into the water, where they foon difloivcd. ‘ I am obliged to be particular, hoping t h ^ _ and if tiiey fhould be as fuccefsfol, X hope they will make it public. There may be other, and perhaps more .effejS:ua] methods for extinguiihing fire. A good cook maid may, for inftaiicc, tdli ut ‘that common\ fait is applied to » bold fire, when d rdlfig s beef (leak.
