THE Trial of the Holly Water Works at Buf falo-A Gala Day among a Portion of Lockport, Calmndulgun and Buffalo Cirfzens-Balked by a Mishap, Bui a Satistactory success, i In the contract mads between the water' commissioners, of Buffalo, on the part of that of Lockport, for the supply of the more elevat. ed portions of the city with water, it was' stpulated that the Holly company should de- monstrate, within thirty days after the works: were in operation, their ability to throw six: streams to the height of one hundred feet. Yesterday was selected as the day when this | demonstration should be made, and the Holly Company resolving that the occasion should that a number of our citizens so disposed should be invited to be witnesses of the trial at their expenge, issued about five hundred free tickets to that end, and the length of the yesterday morniog train for Buffalo, and the crowd that poured into it, showed that the invitation had been very generally accepted. A wajority of our City Fathers and a number of the police force took the train, besides an uncounted crowd of citizens, and, of course, most of the officers and stockholders of the Holly Company and their employes ; also many of the employes of Pound's, and other machine shops. In short, it was the careless declaration of many persons who looked through the train on its way, that \ half of Lockport\ was there. k Oa arriving at the suburbs of Buffalo, those on the train more directly interested got off at Black Rock and visited the engines, pumps, etc., which have been erected in a handsome house for the purpose, about half way be- tween there and the centre of the city, on the corner of Massachusetts and Seventh streets. The new engiue house is a handsoue, sub- stantial structure, forsy-two by forty-three feet in dimensions, built of pressed brick, with stone facings, and at a cost of $12,000. 'The floor and wains-oting is of black walnut and ash, and in appearance is neat and attractive, The magnificent machinery fills the greater portion of the building, and it is under the careful supervision of C. G. Holcomb, first ergineer, and Thomas Humbertson, second engineer. . - < Thus far the work has been done fairly and eatisfuctorily. The machinery has been com- pletely constructed and comprises two fine condensing, reciprocating eogines, cylinders fourteen by twenty-four inches, connected to & single shaft.. These engines work siz gang pumps and Ewo powerful rotary pumps patented by the Holly Company. The gang pumps are used solely for the domestic supply, and the six together can furnish one hundred aud fifty thousand gallons of water in twenty four hours with a fair even pressure. When the whole pump force is applied the supply | can be increased to one million gallons within the same length of time. 20 About half past two o'clock the street cars commenced to pour out, crowds of people in the vicinity of Pratt's Rolling Mill, where the trial was advertised to take place. There | wus to be seen there, besides the persons mentioned in s general way above, many gentlemen whose activity and evident interest in the proceedings, showed them to be Buffa- lonians who were interested,in official capaci- ties, in the show. © Quite a number interested from Canandai- gua were there also. Hight bydrants were; speedily furnished with hose and eight streams of water at once gent sky.-ward, but it was soon seen by their failing to reach the required height, that something was wrong. That something was ascertained to be this : In majlo) on the previous day, a plug was - forced out at the corner of Breckinridge street. It was repaired, but the work was done insffect- ually, so that yesterday it gave out almost immediately, requiring the machinery for ov- ery stream. bolow it to work against an enor- mous leak. . ' < A second test was then made above the leak, A pressure of ninety pounds was then in to day's issue, which announcas the pur- chasing of the Simmons & Hosbury stock, by Messre, 0. S. Rood and A. M. Shelly, two young men who hava had considerable ex- perience in the hardware business. Messrs. Rood & Sholley not only have the reputation of being posted in the hardware business, but of being pleasant men with whom to deal. Therefore they start under good circum- stances and with brigh't prospects, and we have no doubt thoy will succeed ; at least \o trust so. ., Ur Im a BAptOOKH,.-We have bad the pleasure of seeing the outside of & letter en- velope sent by balloon from Paris to Badon, addressed to a lady at that city, who is a resident of Now York and friend of Mr. C. 8 Guild, of this city, in whose hands the envel - ope now is. If it meaps bribery or accept- ing presents, as I am afraid ts does not, I am in favor of it.\ This, it is trae, it is not x literal transcript of the paragraph, as it ap- peared in the message, but Grant himself will be compelled, to admit that it more clearly expresses what ho wanted to say than the put upon the works, and five streams at once wont up to a distance of a hunred feet and perhaps a little over. About this tess there could be no dispute. The company not only carried out its contract, but triumphantly proved that hereafter the services of no steam fire engine will be required in the sections of the city covered by the Holly sys- tem. © At 420 the Lockportians returned home- ward, well satisfied that the Holly Company can do every time all and more than is down in the bills. To show how well the feelings of the Buffaloniau witnesses of the trial tally with those of our citizens, we quote, in con- clusion, from the Buffalo Courier : \ We beard only one opinion in the matter, tally» ing with that expressed by us. # # .% To sum up, briefly, the contract of the company was fully carried out yesterday, and many citizens of influence, who lave not before corceded the merits of the system, were made to ponder the thought that a great mistake bad been made in not providing this cheap and effective water and fire supply over the entire city.\-Daily 18¢%. « *-- Tus Poor. -How nttural it is for people in comforiable circumstances to express ‘grea; pity for the poor.
