Y. v Jan. 9th., 1878, by Rev. H. Hetselgrave, Mr. B. F. Ol«fi«n, of Orary'a Mills, to Him Lucy K. Leunard, of Cantos, N. Y. RoBWrwow -Cirrnwo -Jan. 15, 1878, at the home of the bride, by Rev. S. R Furbish, John R. Robertson and Lydia P. Cutting, both of PouHatn. 0IM. A singular iaJs of poisoning occurred last Thursday night, in which the whole family of Edward P. Qracey, who resides in New York Avenue, in thef 2d ward, were tbe vic- tims. Mrs. Graoey used some saleratus that had laid for some time in a tin oaa, in mak- ing some ladtan meal pudding. They thought it had a diaajreeable taste, and ate but HttW of it, but it setmt aa though enough was eaten to make them all serioualy ill. One of the catfciren was seised with vomiting about 8 oNslook Friday morning, and Mrs. Graoey got up to attend to it, when she was taken the same way, whereupon she aroused her husband} ht got up and also became uiok, to- gether with another child. At this, he be- came alarmed, aad started for kelp, and it was with the utmost difficulty that he oould muster strength enough to call one of his neighbors. Dr. Boyd was sent for and after be had made enquiry, he decided that it was caused by the poison that was extracted from the tin by the aaleratua. Proper remedies were applied, and the family are now well, except Mrs. Orate* who U still ill from ita effects. It happened that Mr, JametHobbatd tn-tho vicinity, and hearing the eriet at once went to the reteue. He found th* parties engaged in a terrible strogjgle and seising the v^Ualtt threw him with co&*id> erable torot against the railin« of the pi- atta. He then raised the girl from tbt- floor, and aeejng that the was able to stand tried to secure her assailant, but he becoming alarmed, started off, pursued by several people who bad been attracted by the scuffle. Terrett, however, succeeded in escaping. It it evident that the fellow intended to commit murder, he having informed some of hit friends whom he met after thU aflair occurred, that he bad killed the girl, and wanted to be assisted in making hit etcape. Luckily for the girl, Mr. Huboard came to the reteue be fore she received any but scalp Wounds. She is now at oomtortable at could be ei« ported. It bat been reported tn'at Mr. Hubbard succeeded in capturing toe fel- low, and tttU be gave him into the bauds of officer Gbodno, but the report 1i-whol- ly false, LAtlMi ; ^ Tetrett was captured Monday after- noon. Chief of police Chapin received that a man answering the de- •cnption of Michael Terrett had been at tbe house of one Mr. Mayne and asked foi a nights lodging. He told Mr. Mayne his name and bis hailing place, and stat- ed that he was on his Wwyto Gouvemeur. He was asked why he dfdn't take the train, and be told them that be was with out money, and that if be got aboard the train the conductor would take bis over- coat He left Mr. M's the next morning for hit destination, arriving there Satur- day night. He Uved en thfs earth •early 72 years, and spent the timein useful employments and friendly mtereowesv We remember him moat familiarly as a steam* boat captain, bit enterprise and praetkel knowledge contributing to the fauidiag antf eptratmg ef several lines of steamboats out for bim. Officer Smith, of the latter place, at once repaired to the residence oi Charles Cottigan, a brother-in-law of Ter- ret, and enquired of Mrs. Coetifran If he *nd it began to be feared that tfes whole of the noble block would be consumed.— At thit juncture steamer no. 4^ equipped with the brand new rnbtier hoot just bought by tbe city, was brought op and the battle oi fleam against 4re began. Bnt a short tinvs passed before the flames were arrested, then driven back, and by, 9 o'clock hose carts, stenmer and drenched Oremen were dismissed, and the building was saved- marred, but not destroyed. Jfr, 'RerrjptHn't unwelcome experience of moving a grocery store at 5 O'clock op a winter morning, so drolly referred to by bim a couple of .weeks ago in our business notice colqina, was repeated by Mr. Q. A. Munro on Tuesday morning. Bis store, being directly beneath the fire, was deluged with water. He, however, suc- ceeded in removing the more perishable of his goods into his stort-room at the rear before they were much w< tu d. Tbe brick wall separating tbe Judson building from the Averell bank building wtt either burned through or broken by a stream of water, and although no fire got into the building, a larg* amount of Water w&s poured in ami freely drenched the Averell bank. The Dominion Telegraph Co. was some- what soaked—their office we mean—but re-occupied the building tbe same day with all their lighting ovoluturt in full blast. Mr. H. F. Lawrence's stock: of station- ery'and books wtt badly dampened, and he was compelled to move the whole into bit picture frame factory on State vt. Very singularly, Mr. Vary's Uw library in bis front office, being shut into tight cases, was not injured in the least, either by fire or water. . , The story above where the fire started Wat occupied by {Mrs. Fawcett. and her son Fred Fawcett M living rooms. They were first roused by the dense smoke in their apartments, and were compelled to leave to suddenly that thny earned noth- ing with tbem but their clothes. Gen. R. W. CAUSE OF THB FIUB. It is perfectly evident to every one who has visited the scene of the fire that it started in the little wood-closet between Political Mattm. If one may judge by the activity of. the fo- cal poUtietos* there it tftbe a very interest- ing time at the approaching Republican town oanotts. The only plaoe in the list of offioars to be chosen that pays is the clerkship. Now this office is held\ by one man and is wanted badly by another. The present incumbent is tlrsady in the field in quest of a renomina- tion, aad so also is his opponent in the person of Nathaniel Welle. It is vary evident that Mr. Well* has a very big job on his thaada. In the first plaoe his opponent has the prestige of his former viotory over him, and in the next plaoe, Wells has some very rotten political timber on which he places too much rtlianbs. Mr. Magutre will undoubted- ly retain the tortj wte which supported him in the caucus two years ago, and, in addition, will draw largely ^-om the ooontry district*. He will aleo have the active personal support of that faction of his party that has been uniformly auoinisfnl la the recast eaoouatara with the Atcheson-Lovejoy ring, which to- gether with Us personal popularity in his party at large, will eartaiafy make kin a very formidable candidate. Now, although M*. Wejlk will attach araoh inportaaoe to the Atohesea hsflaenAe, his mainstay will be a re- tired atat—enan of the seeoad ward, in the peiwon of ej*>aJdermeA Lovejey. Of Mr. JLovejoy we will sty timpl> tbia, that judged by the stand- ard of success, he is a failure poUUoaUy. For the last two or .three years' he has done nothing bat play at politics, in fact he is so oonspionoua a failure, that his advocacy of any cause, ia .the light of past expertem*, jnatly considered to.be a certain forerunuvr of its defeat To eatabhah this fact, we re- fer to hit utter failav* as an Alderman. Hie seal lor Mr. Wells two yeaW ago, ia wluoh he was beaten; his unavailing efforts ,in anp- port of Mr. B. H. Vary may also be noted, the whole series of defeats culminating in his utter rout in the second ward caucus last fall, ia which he m^« the cauae of Dan Peck a personal matter. There ia another element that we have not considered, which we may •ay ia represented by H. R. James, Henry Rodee, Wm. H. Daniels and Stillman Foote. These are men that exert a potent influence in the councils of their party, but it ia very likely that in a aquabbU of tuis nature they will remain neutral Democrats, of oourse, can have no mo^ than a posting interest ia •doh mattcirv l?ut ^he ciuie, as we have stated it, dearly. demjpstrates that there are three distinct elements in the Republican party of this city, and it really seems to us as thtnifch this one jmrticuUr faction would soon begia to tire of theae repeated revere**, and.
