The tribes that are voracious are less prolific, so that they are Tiot unduly multSplied, and those which constitute the prey of others are made more abun- dantiy fertile, and by instinct deposit their spawn in secure places. Thus, hie in the sea moves on harmoniously, arid no race becomes extinct until it has. accomplished the work assigned to- it by the Creator. Manias interfered with the arrangements of Providence in regard to. insects ia two ways. Their supplies have been ent\ off, so that instead • tjrfeeding upon ths for.eSt§ an.d,shi'Ubs, they are now forceri to feed upon cultivated crops. The forests once covered the whole, country'nearly, and every one must see the effect upon insect fife of cutting off three-fourths or more of their nat- orar pasture grounds; '&% the same tirne that there ' iaa been.this reduction in the supplies of the in- .sect tribes, the birds, their natural enemies, have been almost exterminated. They were designed to cbfeek the enormous multiplication of iusects, and to be taken uuder the protection of rnan—for \\\\HBTsake of tEeir alfl m protecting him in the en- joyment of the fruit of his labors. Iustead of re- ceiving this protection, many of the birds have been proscribed by law, and a price set upon the 5 heads of' crows and black birds, as if they were the enemies of man. Vagabond boys have been a special commission to destroy them with powder and lead, as if they were doing the world a ser- vice. So greatly has the stock of birds been re- duced, that cultivators are beginning to be alarm- ed, aod 91 some of the States they have already secured wiser legjslatipn. But it will take rfiaiiy years before the natural balance betweeu birds ' and insects can be restored. jEhessJ are, doubtless, moral lessojpa-miderlying tfiese facts, but it is not our purposeio) discuss them here- Meanwhile man must do uJwily, and wrlb, inSnite labor, what were better done'by the myriads/songsters of (he grove and* the meadow, until these have renamed their'p'lacu in our fields and gardens.
