The gteat conduit, which stretches hack four atm! three quarter miles on Lojhg Island, is capable of issuing forty million gallons daily, but the va-. rious ponds which supply it can issue but twenty million gallons during the twenty-four hours. At the time when tlie water works were constructed, several years ago it waa thought that the Consumption of Brooklyn would not be twenty millions giilloxiB before the dose bl' this”Century. ' I t has alitoally reached nearly seventeen millions, and a ne cessity exists for anticipating a more extended need. The ponds owned by the Water Works Company aud yet unappropriated, are the small One Mile Pond, near Jamaica, the Springfield Fond, Cornell’s aud Conselycu’s Ponds, near Springfield, Wall’s Pooil, at Valley Stream, and Smith’s Pond, at Rockville Centre,— These sheets of water are all artificial, and were created by damming before their purchase liy the Company. A survey o f them has been made, together with that o f various contiguous ponds, and u report will be presented o f .tlie vesult next Spring. It is a qitestlto. for .con sideration, whether to purchase these nCw ponds or to construct an enormous reservoir, wliicli would store an immense quantity of water during each Summer, and destroy pll possibility of a scarcity. Inasmuch as tbe former plan is by far the cheapest, it may be adopted, particularly, as with the reservoirs now existing therej was not the slightest\ fear of a scarcity last snmnter when tlte New York reservoirs became ilarmlngly low.
