Jennie Lee Iras sitting on the little porch-on the old farm house; she had been visiting here all summer, and the days had been very pleasant.— She was singing-an old ballad. But just as he got started the raft started toor ; and as he walked dp the river it walked down, both going at the same rate. When he got to the-, end of the sticks, he fonnd they were near shore' and in light of a tavern; so he landed and walked straight into the bar-room he’d come straight bnt of. The general sameness of things took him a little aback,, bnt he looked the landlord steady it* the face and settled it in his own way. “ Publican,’’ said he, “ are you gifted with a twin brp.tber, who keeps a similar sized tav«rnr with R duplicate wife, a comporting wood pile, and corresponding circa* bill, a mile from here 2 ’’ The ta'verufeeeper was fond of fun and accord ingly said It was just so. \A n d , publican, have yon among your dry goods for the entertainment of man and horser whiskey o f the same sort as that of your broth er's!” * And the tavern man said, from the rising of ther' sun even unto the going down of the same, he had They took the drinks, when the stranger said * “ Publican, that twin brother of yours is a finer young man—a very fine man, indeed. A SNAKE STORY.—A traveler In California tells us a snake-story which wonld be considered a tough one if ho did not bring forward a naturalist of high standing to corrohorato it. H e aaya that rattlesnakes have a natural |and most implacable enemy in a bird called by ther Spaniards “ Cona Oomina.” It has a body little- larger than a robin red-breast, with very long legs, ■ and can keep up in ruuning witli a horse oa a fast trot. These birds always go in pairs. W hen they find the snake lying asleep* in the sun, whicb they often do of a warm day, they run about and collect the burrs of the cactus, which dry and foil off the parent stem ; they are about the size of am English walnut, and are covered with, long sharp> thorns; witb these they fence tbe snake within a circle. If he does not wake when the circle is completed, they then collect other burrs, and hav-- ering over him with one'in their bill, drop themon the reptile, waking him up, when be attempts to escape, Finding (hat he cannot pass over the- barrier, and irritated by the boyonets which have- piered him, he turns on himself, plants his fsuga in his own flesh, and dies of his own venom. An other singular fact is, that in California the rabb)tr the ground owl, and the rattlesnake inhabit thar same hole.^ T h a t one entrance is common to the- three parties, every resident or traveler there knows; bnt what the interior of the domicile ia- has never been demonstrated.
