Y o u w e r e r ig h t in supposing tliat the H u n ter’s Point route, when the idea is to visit Kcw York, is popular with thc people. T h a t ro u te is a great a c commodation and could pot now b e dispensed with.— You were right, also, in saying th a t the J3rooklynroad had b e e n robbed o f lialfol’its value to this village by stopping the use o f steam at thc c i t y line. T h e people of Jam aica have business w ith New York. W h e n they do, they go t h e r e Uy the most d i rect and speedy r o u te—they go by the H u n t e r ’s P o int road. B u t they have business, also, w ith Brooklyn, and w h en th e y do. it is to t h e ir i n terest to reach t h e city in the m o st d ir e c t and speedy m a n n e r. As t h e case stands, Jam a ica, as to intercourse w ith t h e city of Brooklyn, has been very m u c h dam a g e d . The d is placem e n t o f steam power o n the old Brooklyn a n d Jam a ica road, has been au a c tual loss t o the business and property of this place a n d vicinity, and i t there fore should be restored, at least, to Bedford. But Jam a ica has not alone been a sufferer from i h e rem o v a l of steam from the o l d road. I f anything, l o calities 011 th e island east of tliis village have greater cause to complain than our c itizens. T h e steam p r o hibition serves not only as a hindrance t o going from the island to Brooklyn, hut from Brooklyn to Ih e isiand. The latte r consideration ap p lies particularly to p laces a t a distance,—to G rcenport, Sag H a rbor, and th e m any other “ w a tering places,” which once w e re enlivened and made p rosperous by Brooklyn vis itors ; but now, the Brooklynites find it m o re conven ient an d less tedious to go elsew h e r e f o r summer r e - sortp, T h e wholesale rem o v a l o f slcain w a s practically taking a step backw a rd. The sam e principle carried out w ould consign us to (lie old “ post c o a c h e s ’’ a n d high r a tes o f f a r e —to the heavy expense of transport ing f reight to and from Brooklyn by carts and wagons, instead of by ears. T h is backward m o v em ent should lie changed. T h c suggestions of t h e /V ernier on this subject arc praelicah and should life promptly heeded hy nil.
