T lie country in th is .unction is very hilly, and eaeli h i l l is eith e r occupied by a fort o r a r e g i m e n t ; a n d in fa c t e ith e r way a s far as t iie eye can s e e , it is one con tinuous chain o f forts and encam p m e n ts. The valley upon whose c e n tr e tlie principal forts' guns are d ir e c t ed , is t h e one which leads i n a d ir e c t route to W ash ington, and through w h o se green foliage th e rebel G e n . Jackson (it is supposed) intend e d lo m a k e liis v isit to th e city o f W ashington, b u t it is the opinion ot nearly a i l m ilitary' m e n th a t lie would have found tlie “ l a s t d i t c h ” befogo lie en t e r e d t h e D istrict of Colum bia. F a r away in the distance is seen “ Sugar L o a f,” one of t h e peaks o f the Blue I iid g e ; it is situated near th e conflux of t h e P o tom a c ami Shenandoah rivers, and upon the sacred soil of V irginia. Its lofty sum m it tow ers high a b o v e a ll th e other peaks iu this sec tion, and it is beautiful indeed to t h e eye. T h rou g h some tech n icality or o th e r we have not b e e n sworn in y e t, hut we a r e expecting to be daily. T lie men a r c very willing nnd anxious, but I am sor ry t o say th a t such is n o t tlic case w ith some o f the oliicers, a n d I fear tiiat som e of them vvill not s w e a r in, an d w h a t disposition will b e m ade o f them we do n o t know ; and il‘ th e reg im e n t h a s acquired a bad n a m e among m ilitary m e n , (lie censure should b e l a i d upon llicse officers, and not u p o n t h e m en.
