Tho fire commenced betwen three and four o'clock, in the building owned by Samuel Wildor, situated on State St., Nos. 85 and 37, destroying that and a store ad- joining on either side, - As soon as tho al- arm was given, the Fire Department went to the spot, and met the flames manfully, and, although the loss of proparty was large, it was less than many feared it would be, who anw it when tho firemen commenced work, | The buildings were of brick, but far from: being fire proo;, and the Armes spread radidly to every part. 'The stores fronted State St., and extended rearward to Pindel Alley, - 'The fire awept through and made a clean breach of Mr. Wilder's lot. The wenthor was very disagreeable-not cold but sloppy, and the work of romoving the goods was carried on to gront disadvantage -especially the removal of groceries from | the store of Brown & Pitkin, who wore burnt ed out. Mr. Wilder's building was occupied chief ly by Messrs. Howe & Rogers, carpet deal- ore, who aro the largest sufferers by the ca* Intoity. 'They had a splerded stock of goods valued at $20,000, from which nothing was snved. Mr, Rogers occupied a sleeping apartment in the third story, nearly over where the fire appears to have caught. - Ho had barley time to save biniself from suf focntion by springiug from a window upon an adjoining roof, jumping the depth of oue story to the roof and from auother to the ground. - He did not save his wearing apparel, or private effects. - Messts. Howse & Rogers have an insurnuce of $12,500, dis- tributed eqully in five offices. Their nett loss is $7,500, to say nothing of loss by suspension of busines. Store No. 37, next north, and in same block was occupied as a.saloon by Sidney Munu, who lost all his funiture, goods and liquors, Hig loss was, perhapy, $1,000 with an fugur unce of $500. - Ho was nsleep with his broth- ev fu an upper room, and they - eacaped- with their lives, having to pass out through a front ball filled with smoke and fire. Miss Haonushs also has a millinery shop there, and lost overything. 'I'wo University 'studepts named Hofman and Post, hada room in the third story, from which they escaped with difficulty, saving nothing, | 'Thoy estimate their loss of cloth- log, books, watches, &0., at $1000, Mr, Wilder had an fosurnoce of $5,000 on his building, which will nearly cover the loss. 'The next building south brick store owned by the heirs of the late 8. H. Packard. 'This was chiefly qecupied by Brown & Pitkin, ag a wholesule und rotail grocery storw, suc- cessors to J.D. Granpara's Marzponover Piz.-12 spoong- ful cach of sifted (stewed) apple, beaten egg, and melted butter-all thoroughly mixed, and flavored with lemon and sweetened to the taste. - Bake without upper,crust. Less but- ter than the above will do. Arpus Custarp.-Take fine apple sauce, favor with lemon or rose, and half fill the pic- plates with it.
