If they were at fault fo any respootit was in placing too much confidence in the Aercuaut. 'But it should be remembered that ho was reputed to stand high in his profession. Some of them had scon him muke a vory flue asconsion at Bofla lo, and had a landable desite to gratify our citizens with a similar exhibition. They are as sensible as anybody else of the failure, and feel much more chagrined than anybody else at the result. Lunatic Asy- Im for Ingane Convicts. -_ : Passed April 8th, 1858-three-fifths being present. The People of the State of New York, represented in the Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows : Srcrion 1. The building now being erected on the prison grounds -at Auabtitn, for any ney. lum for insane convicts, shall. be known and designated as the State Lunatic. Asylum for Insane Convicts. © j $ 2. The fospectors of state prison shall, at the urst quarterly meeting-of their board, at the Aubura prison, after the passage.of this act, appoint a medical superiatendent for said asylum, who shall, under- the direction of the. gard inspectors have the charge of said asylums, and shall make all the purchase for the sap- port of said asylum, and shall account for all, moneys coming to his hand fo the same man- ner as the agent and warden of any of the atate prisons are now required by law to ac- count. 4 3. The said medical superintendent shall reside in the building, and stall devotarall the time necessary, to the cure and treatment of those confined therein for treatment, He shall receive a salary of oue thousand dollars per annum, payable monthly, and shall be al- lowed rations for himself and family, and all necessary fuel and lights for warmiog and lighting his rooms in said building. ¢ 4. The other officers in said asylam shall be an assistant superintendent andnot oxceed- ing six attendants, who shall be recommended by the medical superintendent and if approved of by the board of inspectors of state prisons, shall be sppointed as such by said board of inspectors, and shall be paid as follows :- 'The sssistent superintendent shall receive thirty dollars get month, payable monthly, and shall also ba boarded in and at: the ex- peose of said asylum, and the said attendants shall each receive twenty dollars per month and be boarded in said asylum. .- 4 5. The medical superintendent shall filein the office of the comptroller of this state, a bond in the peoal sum of ten thousand dollars, conditioned forithe faithful performance of his duty as such, which bond, before it shall be spectors, atid no sich medical superintendent aball enter upon the discharge of the dnties of said office til such bood so approved shall have beon duly filed as aforesaid. ? 6. The superintendent shall estimate monthly, as is now provided by law, and éub- ject to the same restrictions and conditions as in case of agents and wardens of the state prisons, for all- the monies necessary for the support abd maiitainance of said aiylem,. which estimate shail besubmitted to and care> {arly examined by the inspector in charge of the said Auburn prison, who, 'if he is satisfi~ ed that this said estimate: is correct, and that the articles named io said estimate are actual= ly needed for th6 support and- iaintenance of said asylure, shall certify the same, and on the production of said estimate go: certified, to the comptroller, he aball draw his warrant on the treasurer for the amonatnfaéid’zéfi‘mnte.’ and the treasurer shall pay the amount of said warrant out 6f guy - money fu: the treagury. ap- propriated for the support of the state prison. < $7. Whenever the inspectors of state pri- gous shall order apy convict to be transferred, to the asylum for insuue convicts, the agent and warden of the prison from which sach convict: is. transferred, cause a.correct copy of the original certificate of conviction of\eaid:convict to 'be filed in his office, and shall deliver the original certificate to the au- perintendent. of the asylum; and when any such couvict shall be. transferred to . the Au- burn prison from euch esylam, as herelubsfore provided, the said superintendent shall deliver to the agent ard wardea of said prison, such origiual certificate, which shall be filed in the clerk's office in said prison. : { 12. - Phe physician who shall attend any meeting of the board of fnspertors of state prigous, or who shall make any examinations of any convict, as hereiubefore provided, shall be paid his actual aud reasonable traveling expeuses in going to and returning from such, exainifiation or meeting, on the certificate of the president. of the board of imspectors of state pr sons that he lias attended such meet- fog or examination. €13. Taylor (who married a daughter of Gen, Harrison ) and family, and we learn that such was the rapid progress of the fire, and so late its dis covery, that the members of-the household barely escaped in their night clothes!. Oi course nothing was saved in the way of furni ture or documents, and the probaniliity. is. that many valugble papers left by {President Harrison, togetiier with articles cherished as relics of the old hero, and of the early history ofthe. West, have been destroyed with-the buildjag. , The only portrait of Mrs. Harrison in existence (painted by Bhard) with two or three of the General taken at different periods of his life, are probably destroyed. Mts Harrison the widow of President Harrison, fortunately was not in the dwelling; the ven- erable lady at present being at the residence of the Hon. J. Scott Harrison, a son of Gen.
