Y. proclamation Conservation Commissioner Dur- yea that. »^>en practical, the open seasons on game be extended be- yond the normal clese by the same { number ol days as may be lost due | to the closure This could be done. it was explained, for all game ex- cept the migratory bird <ducks and woodcock > season which is set by the Federal government. Precipi tauon through most otf the Adirondacks since Augitft first was reported lowest in neariy two decades. Reports from scores oi j deer camps indicated that wilder- j ness weils were dry- J Governor Deweys proclamation j was aimed to prevent as much as j possible the confusion of deerj hunters who planned to enter the j woods early in preparation for t&e I season's ope rung Monday. During' &e\eral \previous years proclama- tions closing the woods could not be issued until most ol The hunters already were in camp. Major game species affected by the closure include deer, grouse, woodcock, squirrels, cottontail rabbits and^jLiL several counties, pheasants. . Official interpretation of the proclamation prohibits the recrea- tional use of all forests, woodlands or open lands (whether public or private) except for angling, duok hunting and in supervised parks within the areas mentioned pre- viously. All camping in tents and open aarnpsr, again—either on pub- lic or private land .is prohibited. Camping and fire permits ane sus- pended and the starting of fires in the open for any purpose is ban- wed. The proclamation, however, does not prevent entrance into forested areas for necessary industrial en- terprises nor does it prohibit the pasta£> of vehicles over roads through wooded areas to lawful destination. Permanent occupancy of dweUings or residence in hotels is permitted, but the temporary u«e of camps or cottages is not. ,OnJy 150 deer licenses have been sold'so far at the Gouvemeur town clerk's office, mainly because of the postponed opening of the 4eer reason, which was scheduled to begin Monday. Many busters, however, point. out that conditions would not be I favorable for hunting even if it were permitted. The visibility in the woods is poor because of the many leaves clinging to trees and uwderbnjfch, the weather is too j warm to have meat keep, and tbe • dryness of tbe woods would make j the hurrWf toe noisy.
