The Nmional Young Leaders Conference is sponsored by the Congressional Yotatb Leadership Council, a nonprofit, lum p ^san educational organization. Founded in I98S, die Council is committed to “fostering and inspiring young people te mihieve tiieir ftill leader ship potential.” More than 37S members of the United States Congi^s join ibis commitment as oteriitters of the Councirs Honorary Congressional Board o f Advisors. Nurse lauded at M.L Bassett COOPERSTOWN - Patricia Brown. MS, CNM, RN was select ed as the 1996 Nurae of Distinction by Bassett Hospit^. Brown, direc- mr o f Nurse Midwifery, joined Bassett in 1986 as the area's first certified nurse midwife. “Ms. Brown has played a large role in expanding the obstetrical services available witiiin the Basseu region for the past decade,\ said Barbara Curtan, vice president for Nuising and Patient Care Services, “and she continues to work to fur ther improve the birthing experience at the Bassett Birthing Center.\ Brown is responsible for ^1 stages of obstetrical care, srarfing with edu cation about tiie importance of early prenatal care, continuing through delivery and into the first year o f the baby’s life. Bassett introduced certi fied nur^ midwifery services in 1986 to provide an ^temati ve to tra ditional bbstetrical care. The result is high quality obstetrical care marked by low infmt mortality rates, low c- section rates and high VBAC rates. In 1994, Ralph Nader’s Public Citizen Health Research Group ranked Bassett first among ail New York state hospitals for having the lowest c-section rate and the highest VBAC rate in the state. In 1995, Bassett's c-section rates remained stable, and VBAC success rates were even more impressive.
