Born Sept. 27, 1949 in Dayton, OH to Jack and Lois Schmidt. Mike Schmidt spent his entire 18-year major league career with the Philadelphia Phillies, instrumental in their 1980 World Series victory over the Kansas City Royals and their appearance in 1983, and finishing with 548 home runs, 509 at third base to become the most prolific ever at that position. Schmidt was the discovery of Phillies scout Tony Lucadello, who found him at Ohio University. It was the production there that captured Lucadeilo’s attention. J Schmidt set single season records at Ohio U. with 45 runs, 10 home runs and 38 walks. Even with his dismal senior year, he was named to the College All-America team. In his first year at Ohio U . Schmidt his .312 with seven dingers and 24 RBI in 30 g a m ^ . His sophomore year saw him in 39 games, with a .333 batting average, 10 homers and 39 RBI. while in his senior year he hit .331 with 10 round trippers and 35 RBI in 37 games. He graduated from Fairvievv High School in Dayton in 1987 and took a schofarehip to Ohio U., even though he was a dismal .179 hitter with a single home run in his senior year at Fairview.
