FREEMAN’S JOURNAL □ April 26. 1995 U 9 Health & Fitness How do we teach children to be nice, feel good about it? I have come to the conclusion that we need to teach our cbil^en to be nice. A comedian 1 heard awhile back used the sentence, “Its nice to be nice to the nice.” More and mone this makes a great deal o f sense to me. It really is nice to be tt are nice. Not nice to people that (Btly do I warn to u the wdue of being nice, but also teach diem that it mah good to be nice. How D o v e l o p m e n t a l l y Speaking Robbie Purltz teach diem that it makes you feel good to be nice. How is this to be achieved in a world where niceness is often devalued, scoffed a t and equated with wimptness? How do we teach our c h il^en that to be nice is an atnibute to be c h ^ shed and admired, not to be ashamed of and hidden? Ta&e a few minutes out o f your day and watch children at play; watch how they relate to one anoth er. It is an eye^iKning otperience. you think we, a s a axiety, some how have given our bids the mes sage that it‘s more important, more admirable, to be tough and insensi tive? Have we given them the tm p m ^on that nice g ^ finish l a ^ I think we have. However, teing an aptimis, I know that we, the adults, can tom things around. Here are a few i r ^ and true suggeaians; • Children need to imow that adults^arents aren't perfect. Adults make m istake Adults can also • Adults should be setting the ffliample. They should not only say it, but do it. • Adults should be setting limits — what will be tolerated and what • Adults should encourage chil dren into m;tivitie3 that help others. Above all we adults must “show and teU\ the kids ttot it is truly nice to be nice.
