Darmstadt Speaker At Rotary Meeting Shandaken Has Sole Drop In County Rate Phoenicia, Dec. 27-The town of Shandaken is the only one in Ulster county that will not have an increase in county tax rate for 1974. The Shandaken rate will drop about $1.63 to $31.30 per thousauid, compared to in creases ranging from $ 1.01 in the town of Plattekill to $57.66 per thousand in the town of Denning. The county adopted a $37.7 mfllion budget for 1974 on D ^ . 4. About $10 mUUon of this is to be raised by t&xes. The town of Shandaken decrease came about largely because of an improved state equalization rate, which rose from 25 in 1972 to 28 this year. The higher the equalization rate, the lower the tax rate. During the last year, the town of Shandaken’s board of assessors, Erich Griesser, Leonard Ford and Dan Kier- nan, made a town-wide reas sessment of real prop^erty, which brought the assessed valuations into closer r-ela- tionship to the “ real” or market value. OCS Board Delays Action On Exemption Phoenicia, Dec. 27—The Onteora board of education has tabled a proposed change in exemptions for resident taxpayers over 66. The change would have increased the maximum allowable income from $5,000 to $6,000 for those elderly persons who are granted a 50 per cent reduc tion in school taxes on property owned within the district. The board decided to hold off on the change until the school district attorney can determine whether the board would be able to reduce the maximum at a later date if it wished to do so. In other action the board held first reading on changes in district policies. One is to increase from $1,000 to $1,500 the amount that may be spent on purchases without com petitive bidding. The otiier tightens full residfeacy re quirements regarding pupils who must pay out-of-disUict tuition fees. The board accepted ttie resignation of Miss. Janet Faughman as dean a t girls, effective Jan. 4, and the retirement of Mrs. Florence Grant, cook at the Phoenicia elementary schooL Mrs. Mona Moore was appointed teacher of English at the hig^ school, effective Jan. 2.
