*: VOL. VlTI.~-NO. 45. MAlKiAliBTVIliLE, N, ,'Y., T1IUBSJ)AY, OCTOBEK 10, 1»02. WHOLE NO., 408. OYER HALCOTTYILLE WA!. GLIMPSES AT KELLY CORNERS, VEGA AND DENVER. \Tl/e News\ Man Meets the Poormaster. Over the- \Nickel Plate\ Road. Beauties of the Bat&via Kill. Friday of last week was one of the perfect days that murk the golden month of October, and through the courtesy of Mr. P. F. Hoffman, proprietor of the Hoffman House at Arkvllle, THE NEWS ' man was permitted to eDjoy its euDshlue and Invigorating air. Behind hi* bay .horse, Pi inee, we left the village early in the forenoon and were soon winding our way ulong past the thriving farms and Inviting homes that on either side dot the toad that leade to Kelly Corners and Haloottville. Our first step was at the busy place owned by the Hubbell Bi others, Will and Burr—the fo.tner a Justice by election and the other a genius by nature, where I spent a good part ot an hour In looking over the enterprise that produces any- thing from a keg of new elder to an eleotrlc motor. To the mechanically inclined their work- shop is an Inspiration. Hero are the lathe, the tiny engine and boiler, and the numberless labor-saving appliances In- vented by Burr Hubbell, who is an ex- pert machinist, though he never served an hour's apprenticeship. To facilitate his work as a bicycle repairer he invent' ed a device for holding a bike In any posi- tion that has attracted wide attention and meets a ready sale. He also Invented a stand for displaying bicycles in show windows that Is a marvel. • A specimen of bis handiwork is seen In the little maii-ie engine that one could cover with a wa er pail and whloh is perfeot in every detail. It was used to propel a boat on the lake at Hatcottville Until found too expensive for the purpose. In addition to the machine shop they run a saw-mill and handle all kinds of builders' supplies, plumbing and tel< phone Hue material, hardware, milk cans, etc. They have a farm of 203 acres and are now milking seventeen grade Jerseys, the milk from whloh j;oos to the Ex- change oreamery.' The milk from this farm has gone to the same ooiicoru durlug tkelast twenty-live years, At this season of the year they are busy mabiug elder, ot which they pro duoe at their mill from 8,001) to 15,000 gallons annually. In domeetlo matters they divide the. old homestead, a neat and lnvliiug Structure near by, and live under one roof as brothars and their wives and Children should, while but a toss of a pebble away lives their father In another pleasant house. Dinner time fuund Mr. Hoffman and I at Hult's hp.lol la Haloottville, where a good dinner awaited ue. At tho hotel bairn Warren Kaator, whose blaoksmlth shop Is one of the village land marks, Showed me a buuelr of buggies from the Phoiujx Carriage Q irnpany of Cincinnati, 0.. which were simply poems on wheels. One was named tho \Twentieth Century\ and would make any horse man's mouth water. Tho other two were h.trd-rubber tired rigs, and handsome onough for an emperor to ride In. Mr. Koator Is selling agent for the Phoenix people, and also handles blankets, robes, etc. Mr. Hall's house Is a pluasantone with pleasant surroundings. There are spa- cious grounds ou every side, with the lako but a short c'Utanoe away and lu plain sight. He Is going in for summer boarders next year, and with the altruc tlons he will have to offer he ought to till his house. While Mr. Hoffman visited with old acquaintances I had short chute with George W. Kelly,' Blaoksmlth Will- lams, Elder Clark and others and epont a few minutes in George Hubbell's store. The latter has opened a store lu this vil lage, as will bo soon by our advertising columns As I found that about every one lit the village was a subscriber to THE NEWS there was nothing for me to do but move on or sit still and look pleasant, and en, after Mrs. A. S. Brink, the popular ralllln or of Hqlcottvlllo, hud secured a space (n the paper, Prluoo was again hooked to |,he landlord's buggy and we went up In (.foe air oyer the Ten Thousand Dollar jtnad to Denver, 'Tho view from this road Is a good deal better than tho whooling, for while wo bumped along wo caught some beautiful landscapes showing stretches of wool- land lu its autumn garb of gold and scar- let and purple, with fertile farms and substantial homes nestling among the distant peaks. To tho credit of ttoxbury bo It said that the moment we crossed the town line tho road became very muah better, and going down tho other side waa more onjoyablo. The view from the top of tho bill Is superb and would furnish a fitting sub- Jnot. for tho brush of a J, Francis Murphy, Who might do for this valley what Blors- dadt did for tho YuscmUo, and tints give It world-wide fame. Tho broad Holds, the big, woll-lcopt barns and Ij'iy horuou bftspoale a tluilly, liitolllKont people who Hud a pleasure nnrl ludopotrdenut) lit life that full to too few In these hustling, pinching, dle-ehimlng- a dollar times, At Den vol' a good uom>n|>ondoiil, for 1 TjtwNmwH was suourod, and this winter, when the cold wluds blow and the enow\ lies deep the people of tho valley mu nil heaven enough for some folks. Arrangements will also be iha.de to have Vega news.. Chats with J. T. Morse, \ Nickey' Redmond, Postmaster Jenkins, J. S Hinltley and others revealed the fact that most any fellow who goes up there and behaves himself will be well treated At Kelly Corners I wa,B fortunate enough lo wake the acquaintance of Poormaster Peet, and In view of what may transpire between now and next grass I hope I made a good imprespion. Buckwheat Is scarce, pork is up and I have no pass on the railroad. W. H. EitiiUS A WEEK IN MARGARETVILLE, BIG AND LITTLE EVENTS OF SEVEN DAYS THAT ARE GONE. PERSONAL MENTION.
