m CATSKIXT/ MOUNTAIN NEWS, THURSDAY, AUGUST 21, 190* WVK YODNfl MEAI TONS OUT A DREA1 {Original.) \Stranger mouglit I aslc what tlrae it'll be when we git to MJIlvillcV\ ' \Fivo fifteen,\ I replied booking behind me, I saw a man who appeared to be about fifty years old. He was ill nt ease .about soiao- thtng, but whether It was In finding biinseif In a civilized laud, for which he was t'.v no means fitted, or was ap- proaching some crisis in bis life 1 could not tell. I encouraged hiw to talk, and be did so. Twenty-five yenrs before he had been Jilted. He had gone to Uie gold re- gions and made n fortune. Hcccntly learning thnt his former love was sin- gle, he had renewed his proposition of a quarter of a century before. The woman had returned a prompt accept- ance, and he was going to his home to be made happy after so many years of walling. He opened a carpetbag and took from a soiled roll of papers a card photograph. It was the saucy face of a girl of eighteen and pretty enough to kiss. \Thar she air, stranger; tbar's Mil- tauldy. I hev kep' thet pictur' by me ever since I left ipr, an* she wrote me thet one of me, taken about the same time, hed been on the parlor mantel, whar she could see it every day. In her last letter she warmed up over !*, sayin' she was lookln' anxiously fur that black mustache, thet roun' cheek, them raven locks she'd knowed years afore.\ The man's mustache was a yellow gray, his cheek a furrowed leathern, and on the top of his head stood a few scattered hnlrs like timber on a moun- tain that had. been swept by fire. 1 looked from him to the likeness of his early love, and It occurred to me that the same changes had doubtless oc- curred in her. I said nothing, well knowing that no word from me would avail to prepare him for the change lie would find hi the girl. However, it oc- curred to me that I might devise some plan to soften the disappointment \My friend,\ I said, \do you think you will know the lady when you meet her?\ \Sartin. D'ye suppose I could ever furglt that purty face?\ \I would like to bet you a tenner thnt you won't know her.\ He dived into ids pocket, drew forth a f«t roll of bills and, wetting his thumb, selected n ten dollar bill, which I mated. Then I arranged with him to send for his fiunceo to couio to the ho- tel we agreed to stop at, and ho was to see her among other women. Ho gave mo his name, Mark Spellbinder, While his betrothed was Mahulda ttalls. After Mr. Spellbinder and I had reached the hotel I mailed a note to Miss Hails, saying that if she would call at the hotel that evening a friend of her lover would give her informa- tion of him. Then I went out and spent $10 for a wedding gift. About 8 o'clock I was informed that a lady wished to see me in the parlor. I found n very fat person, with griz- zly gray hair—what there was of It— the front teeth decayed and n look of chronic dissatisfaction on her face. \Miss Kails, I believe.\ \Yes sir, Miss Rails. What ye got to tell me 'bout Murk Spellbinder?\ \He is here in this house. Ho wishes to know if you will recognize him.\ \Recognize him? Why not?\ \He's older, you know.\ \So am I, but I hope I'm not a fright.\ I whispered to n waiter to tell Mr. Spellbinder to come in. There were several people in the room, including a girl of twenty-five. Before Spell- binder arrived I purposely left Miss Rails and walked, to a fireplace. The groom expectant came in and looked Inquiringly about him. If his eye touched Miss Ralls, it did not remain upon her for more than a moment. Then, after taking in several women, it rested on the young lady. It had been arranged between him and mo that ho wus to leave the room without giving any evidence of having made a selection. As soon as he was gone I returned to Miss Ra.lis and after a brief chat on unimportant matters told her thnt her lover had been in tho room. \Been liere--ln this room? I don't bllovo It. Only one man has como in since I've been hero, an' bo was nn old codger, bald as a coot an' with cheeks liken new plowed Held.\ \Tlmt was he, I feared you wouldn't recognize him,\ And without waiting for more words I excused mysolf and Joined Mr. Spellbinder. \Well did you pick her out?\ I asked. \ynas bo said, with a sigh. \She hain't near so purty as she war, but she's kind o' nice anyway.\ \Widen one was It?\ \The girl by the winder,\ ' \You're mistaken, Miss Ralls snt In tho far corner.\ \Wh-n-a-tl Tlio fat olo cnt with snngglo teeth?\ \You shouldn't speak so disrespect- fully of tho woman you tiro to marry.\ Ho looked bewildered. Several times ho started to say something, but failed to got It out, At last ho took out tho roll of bills I had soon once before and handed It to me. \Stranger ho said, \1 feel kin'or. 'a though somopn war goln' to happen to rao. If somopn does, glvo thofc to Mn- hnldy.\ Ho turned and walked invny. I re- turned to tho parlors Miss Italia had vanished. Tlio next morning I learned that Mr. Spellbinder bnd taken an early train for tho west. I sont a mossongor with tlio bills ho had left to Miss Itnlls-1, countod fl2,(100~thontoolc tlio train for liomo. Utter, a prominent phy- tilciun of Panama, Colombia, In « recent letter states: \LastMaxeb 1 had as a patient a young lady sixteen years of age who had a very bad attack of dyeintery. Everything I. prescribed for her proveii Ineffectual and she was growing worse every hour. Her parents were sure she would die. She bad become so weak that she oouid not turn over In bed. Some men carry on great enterprises with little apparent effort. Their success is due to skill In selecting efficient exec- utive beads. Many a business man breaks down trying to supplement the work of In- competent heads of departments sim- ply because he does not know bow to choose the right men. A man of com- manding ability does not worry him- self over details. He makes out his programme and then selects men who can carry It out to the letter. Indeed it is a sign of weakness for the head of a concern to bother about little de- tails. It shows that he lacks the In- sight, the business sagacity, the abili- ty, to select and to manage men who can do things efficiently. Many heads of large concerns spend little time In their offices. They travel or remain at borne, but the business goes on like clockwork simply because tbey know how to select men who can efficiently do the work assigned to them. It Is a great art to duplicate oneself In another and multiply oneself many times by selecting those who are vast- ly superior to ourselves, but who did not happen to have had our opportunl ty to do the thing themselves.—Sue cess.
