Wagon Capsises While Crossing Stream ana He Is Drowned Under the Hay. On Monday afternoon of last weelr, B,bout 6:30 o'clock, a moat heartrending accident oocurral on the farm of Delos Georgia, the Jotham Jucld pla,ce near North Franklin. A load of hay was being brought from over the Oulc- out by Mr. Georgia and his helper, and an only child of Mr. Georgia, a bright little boy about 0 years old, went with the men to ride back on the hay. As they oiossed the creek with the load one of the stringers of the bridge gave way and tipped the load Into the water with the boy underneath. It was a try- ing time for the men, especially the father. The forks were under the load and they had only their hands with which to move the hay from the drowning boy. Still it was speedily done, but not until It was too la,te to save his life. Efforts were made to resuscitate the little one and a physician was speedily Bummoned, but it was too late. The life had gone out of little Emory and the light from a happy home. DOK'T WANT SMALLPOX. AT A RIPE OLD AGE. Miss Margaret Davidson Passes Away After a Long and Active Life. Mrs. Margaret Dunn Davidson died Monday forenoon, July 14, at the resi- dence of her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Mable, at DeLanoey, at the age of 01 years and 10 months. Funeral services were held the following Wednesday at the U. P. Church at West Delhi, the pallbearers being Edward, John, James and William Thompson and George and Wesley Clark, all being grandsons of the deceased. She was a charter member of the West Delhi church and remained a member till the day of her death. She wae a woman of rare Intelligence, an omnlverous reader and until very recently maiutalued a keen Interest in public affairs, both Church and State, and was a, regular subscriber to a number of publications, both relig- ious and seoular. She kept up quite a correspondence, writing her letters In a very legible hand. She was truly a re- markable example of both physioal and mental longevity, and one of the very last surviving of the hardy pioneers who made a \howling wilderness blossom like the rose.\ DowmsviUc Will Quarantine Visitors From Walton. \It Is a oondition and not a theory that confronts us,\ says a Walton paper referring to the epidemic of smallpox In that village. The board of health of the town of Colchester views the matter In the same light, for it has been decided that all people who come from places where the contagion Is prevalent and locate here to await the abatement of the disease shall be quarantined for a period of two weeks. This course will meet with general approval. The prevalence of the disease In Walton has already, ac- cording to statements of many people of the place, turned away for a time a vast amount of business. This fact Is regret- table, still It Is far from being right to conceal the true nature of the disease simply from a financial viewpoint. An epidemic of smallpox In any place means Buffering, a big expense, and proba.b!y loss of life, and all due precaution should be taken against the disease entering our place. A Hot Game at Hobart of i-o. Results In Score Smallpox Scare at Meredith. The tenement house of Ex-Bupervlsor Shaver on Shaver Hill, Meredith, has been quarantined on account of throe cases of smallpox in a family by thenome of Wells. Mr. WollsworJcefor Mr. Shaver. About two weeks ago a sister of Mrs, Wells oame from Walton to visit them and doubtless brought the disease. Dr. Hendilck of Troadwell visited the family Thursday and plaoed them In quarantine. He pronounoed the cases similar to those at Walton. There Is considerable ex- citement at Meredith at present.— Dela- ware Republican. Damaged by Deer. It Is stated that farmers along the Wlllowemoo complain of the damage that the deer are doing their orops and one man averred that they were demoraliz- ing his cows, for they seemed particular- ly fond of Jumping the fences of the field In which the cows are pastured and, af- ter browsing for a while would again leap the fence and take to the woods, and as the corrupting effect of bad example hie cows, once sedate and well behaved, bad all become \breechy\ and Imitated the doer In doing steeple chase stunts over fenoos. One oil the best and cleanest games of ball ever witnessed In Hobart was played there last Wednesday afternoon between the Hobart team and Company G of One- onta, the latter winning with a score 1-0. It was a contest of batteries, that of Company G proving the superior. Both were well supported. Not a run was made until the last Inning, when Marble rolled In. The entire game was snappy, and the absence of wrangling was a most commendable feature. The diamond Is a new one, used for the first In this game. A convenient slope of ground serves aB grandstand and bleachers, and spectators can see the game without crowding the line. The umpire was • Mr. Ackley of the In- dependent, and his decisions met with gen eral approval. The batteries were Shef- field and Beardsley for Hobart, and Blanchard and Merrltt for Company G. In Haindeu George and Willis Aker are bemoaning the loss of their pony through the oily tongue of a stranger. The fel- low, who represented himself as a horse dealer, offered George $80 for the pony, harness, wagon and an ancient rifle. The sum offered waB largely in excess of the value of the outfit, but George was foxy and wanted time to consider the proposition. Finally, with a show of reluctance he accepted and got ready to do business with the air of a man who Is about to lay a great sacrifice on the altar of necessity. Jusl at that moment, however, the dealer's bank account was a little shy, but with the promise to pay George In the morning he drove the rig away and at last accounts had not been heard from, BEARDS AND GLASSES.
