Vacancies in tho office of trustee shall bo filled by tbe school commissioner, if tbe said vacancies are not filled by a district ineoting within one month, after they occur. School commissioners may accept the resigna- tion of nny trustee or clerk of a district, at nDy district meeting. Orders must not bo drawn upon a Supervisor for any money unless there shnli be at the timo a sufficicht amount of money in tho hands of such Supervisor belong- ing to tho district to roeot such an or- der, neither must nn order bo drawn on the tax collector unless the funds to meet such an order are in the collec tor’s hands. I f it is an injury, then nwny with it, for ngricul- tnro is tho foundation of our ptosperi- ty. Tbo president ‘ tolls yon thnt tbe duty on foreign goods is added to tbe price of tlio domestic on tbe foreign articles and thereforo it is a robbery of the consumer. How much of yonr pro ducts do yon think nre consumed here at homo ? Over 92 per cent When w«> bad no protective tariff we bad no suck honto market Now we Bend to Europe a paltry 6 or 8 por cent of onr pro- ducts. Wernisoin tbis country 1 ,000, 000,000 pounds of butter yearly, and of that only a paltry 38,000,000 pounds go to Enrcpo. Tlio home market has consnmod it nil Compare tho price of butter now and in I 860, before the pro- tective system was adopted. Butter wan sold for only 1 $ cents a pound. Thon tho democrats say that the price of agricultural implements wonld be lower. Why, we mako agricultural im piemen tg so low in price now that we aro selling them in England and all over Europo. You get 1 00 per cunt, moro for your farm products than you did in 1 860, and tho prices of manu- factured products nro 50 per cent, less than they wero then. Why democrats sb >urd bavo put wool on tho free lit t I am puzzled to understand. The pres idcnt says that the high tariff does not bonofit tho working classes, that they have to pay a tax on everything they buy, which loses them tho advantage of their own high wages. The protective tariff has led to an improvement of tbe breed of sheep and of the quality of wool. Our mnttnn is as good orthat of England. Break down the tariff nnd you will destroy tho finer grades of Bhoep. How much wool goes into a suit of cloths? In a heavy suit not over seven pounds, worth $1 40. Now therefore your suit would cost yon that much more, but if yon have fifty sheep yonr loss by tbe abolition of tbe duty on the woql wonld be $30. Therefore, to save $1.40, you would lose $30. I can’t see tho profit of that. [Applause nnd laughter.] More, ver, everything wo consume on tbe table, with the ex- ception of sugar, is cheaper than in Eui'cp\. Our laboring men have meat twice a day. The laboring man in Eu rope who should have meat twice a day wonld think bitnself nn aristocrat.” ■*—■ CHEAP. E. D.
