He will again be a candidate for the representa tion of the metropolis at the ensning elect ion. The liberal candidate from Windsor has been returned by a large majority. The West India steamship Parana arrived at Southampton with $1,250,000 on freight, part of which was California gold. A company, with a capital of $2,500,000, has been started in London to establish a line of steamers between the Thames and N. York, touching at Cork for passengers. The Crystal Palace project was exciting the greatest interest. FRANCE. The accounts from Paris are principally occupied with speculations upon the coalition formed against Louis Napoleon by the Nor thern Powers, during the visit of the Emper or of Russia to Vienna and Berlin. It appears that these powers would not ob ject to Louis Napoleon becoming an elective Emperor of France, but every attempt to pre- pelnate any imperial dynasty on the part of the President would be resisted by Russia, Austria and Prussia. M. De Rcckerevirs mission for Louis Na poleon to the Emperor of Russia and Austria, has proved a complete failure, as he could .pot obtain an audience with these Potentates. In event of Louis Napoleon becoming act ual Emperor, he would be called upon to re spect the existing treaties, and give assurance that France will keep within her present territorial limits, and explain the political nature of the political doctrines of the gov ernment. The three powers prefer to look upon Louis Napoleon as a temporary and provis ional. power, and recognise the house of Bourbon as the sole and legitimate dynasty of France. This determination has caused great alarm and chagrin to the Bonaprtist party. Gen, Pearce was never Gevevnor of New Hampshire. His father had that honor, how ever. The General was frequently chosen lo the Legislature, and held the office of •Speaker. In 1833, he was sent lo Congress —holding his seal in the House of Repre sentatives until 1837 when he was promo ted to the Senate, where he remained until 1842. Jn ’47, he was appointed Brigadier General, (being one of the nine civilians thus elevated,) but he was no more distinguished as a soldier than as a civilian. lie is in the prime of life, of fair character, ordinary talent and acute political prejudices, Few men could have been selected by the democracy whose defeat would excite less personal re gret, and,yet he will probably receive a very cordial support from the great mass of his party. The Empress of Russia, who arrived at Potsdam on Saturday last, is in a very week state, hardly ab'e to rise from her couch.— Her eyesight suffers very much, one eye be ing very nearly lost. Altogether her vita! functions are at a very low pitch, and kept from stagnation chiefly by medical stimulants. ITEMS AND WONDERS, W HEN in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one firm to dissolve the mercantile bonds, which have connected them with others, and to assume among the pow erful dealers in wool, cottons, silks, and tapes, the separate and equal station to which the laws of Good nature, and the tricks of the trade, en title them, a decent inspect to the opinions of our fellow sufferers, requires that we should declare the causes which impel us to the sepa ration. We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men (including the Ladies of course,) are created with certain inalienable bound-to-keiep- up-with-the-times-a-tiveness-rights and feel ings, among these, are Silks, Broadcloths, and summer Dress Goods. That to secure these rights and creature comforts they are induced to “ look around.” But when such a course becomes destructive to their own interests, it is right for a trading community to abolish it. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that customers long established, should not change for light and transient concerns—and experience of late has shown, that mankind hath suffered much from that course. All of these things have been witnessed, and to prove which, let the following facts be sub mitted for candid consideration : They have refused to sell regular and staple styles of Dry Goods, and have substituted auc tion trash in its stead. They have, by flaming show bills, gassy pla cards, and long lengths of red flannel, called together small bodies, into uncomfortable pla ces, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into unprofitable investments. They have obstructed the side-walk with empty boxes and dusty, faded goods, .marked only — They have imposed heavy taxes on our friends by selling them goods unknown to, them. They abolished the plain English, for poor French names on Y’ankee goods. These, with along list of other grievances, have determined us to hold them as we hold other Dry .Goods retailers—enemies in trade, socially friends. We, therefore,.the representatives of N o . 3& S e n e c a St.) Geneva, having recently removed 3 doors below our old place of busi ness, into tho large and commodious New Store, No. 32, (one door above Messrs.
