. i * Mr. Greeley’s Lecture The subject of Mr. Greeley's lecture on Sfrtimlay evening was :th* 1 Crystal Palace and its. LfetesonsV T h e audience was large, ami composed mostly of those who are ear nest thinkers and aVitors. The lecturer, al though nt t possessed of the oratorical graces, has a command over his auditors, which the thore graceful hut lc®,® tlioitgthtful niay Vain ly covet. The lectu re did not .fall to elicit that warm approbation which it has received elsewhere. In thought and construction, if not in the delivery, it was truly eloquent. At the close of Ins. lecture Mr. Greeley, at the special request of some of our citizens, gave a short address on temperance. He pn seated his views, which are total absti nence and legal suasion, (by the instrumen tality of the Maine Law) with great force.— He uttered many great thoughts in a few words, and probably did more for temper ance in fifteen minutes than Gough coulu do in that number of hours. He however entertains no hope that the Maine Law will he adopted in this State hv the present Leg- islature,—• Yales Courtly Whi~ F a i r ; The Ladies of the Catholic Congregation, have resolved to hold their Fair for the bene fit of St. Joseph s Cathedral in Buffalo, in Concert Hall. They then waited upon the com mander of the United States1 sloop-of-war Jvin? in the harbor, and a-ked protection in the event of force being used by the British authorities to secure the payment. Receiv ing a satisfactory reply, they informed Her Majesty's Consul ol their determination to resist future collection of the tribute. The water is very low at present, and il is with difficulty that passengets get up the river. The harbor xvas full of craft when the Ohio left on the 25th ult. Pots un- l A Boston correspondent of a New York paper states that the liquor dealers in that city continue to evade the Maine law and the officers who execute it, and succeed in sending large quantities of liquor into that Ntate. Quantities are taken in bottles pul up in tavellers’ trunks and valices, and a good deal is transported in coils of lead pipe, lie mentions a case, in which on a vessel unloading at Portland a ban*. I of flour was seized, in which a cask of liquo** was found concealed, and while the excise officers were congratulating themselves upon having d scovered this dodge, the liquor was- coolly going ashore in coils of lea I pipe.
