His attempts to fill it up ’with firm earth totally failed. It swallowed up every one of the numerous loads cast into it, and gaped for more, making nothing of the energetic measures to destroy it,' A locomotive engine fell a sacrifice to its insatiable nature, for having ventured too far, it was taken in by the bog, and has never been seen since; it now lies in the bog at some unknown depth below the railway. At length the Engineer overcame the dif ficulty of the bog by stratagem, not force. Finding that the bog was too much for all the loads of solid otuffhe could put upon it, and was not to be filled up, he compassed his object by floating the rails across it, which was done by wooden rafters. By this means, the bog is made to bear the rails as firmly as hny other part of this extremely well laid railway, and the great trouble it once gave is ‘now only matter of recollection. B loomer W inter C ostume - —The Water Cure Journal says, Mrs. Miller, daughter of the Hon. Gerritt Smith, and Mrs. Elizabeth €. Stanton, wife of Senator Stanton, have been spending a few days in New York, and introducing to their up-town aristocratic friends a beautiful Bloomer costume for win der, consi ting of black fur hats, broadcloth cloaks and dresses trimmed with fur, broad cloth trowsers made like men’s, and hand some water-proof boots. The whole suit was elegant and becoming, and struck a heavy blow at conservative prejudices. Mr. Geni i, the celebrated hatter, at the request of Mrs. Gove Nichols, has got up a beautiful style of hat for the new costume—a modification of the Kossuth hat—which, elegantly trimmed, 'is as becoming an article of dress as was ever Worn. This shows stamina on the part of the ladies, and a determination, having set tled what are their “ rights,” to “ maintain them,’1 Vive la Bloomers ! They are not exotics that bloom only in summer, but hardy plants, that defy the exigencies of a northern winter. S c u lptu res from N in e v e h .— Williams College, Mass> has just received, through the instrumentality of Rev. Dwight N. Marsh, American Missionary at Mosul, two of. the wonderful slabs excavated at Nineveh under the directions of Dr. Lay aid. The specimens are la-ge, one being seven and the otherseven and a half feet in hight, are cast in bas-relief, and are covered with inscriptionsof the cunei form character. Both represent human figures, one however, hearing an eagle’s head, the other that of a man. The slabs were neces sarily sawn into several parts in order to al low of their transportation. They are said to be as great curiosities as any which have been sent to the British Museum, and the liberality c f Dr. Layard is therefore the more highly to be praised. The slabs have actu ally arrived at the College. D eath of H on . J ohn D ickson . —We are ained to hear of the death of Hon. John ckson, of West Bloomfield, Ontario county, which took place on Sunday last. His dis ease was an affection of the heart. Mr. D, ■settled as a lawyer in Bloomfield, as early 3813. He has transacted an extensive busi ness in his profession, in his own and adjoin ing counties, and filled vaiious public stations, and among them, Member of the Legislature and Congress. In all his public and private relations, he was faithful and upright, and performed all his duties with marked ability. He was widely known and universally re spected. Ontario County had few worthier citizens.— Rochester Democrat . It is said that Judge Bronson, in conse quence of the position taken by Attorney- Hen. Chalfield, declines being associated with that gentleman in defending the State against the suit of Mr. Yates, who applies for a man damus to compel the Canal Board to give him a contract, as he was one M lowest bidders. e (td- There is to be a new issue introdruced into politics in New Hamphive. A large tiumbav of voters have resolved not to sup port any man for school commissioner who can be ■“ bought up by school hook agents.” The idea is a good one. If successful, it will save parents a great deal of money. C anada T r a d e . —American buyers are busy now m the Canada market purchasing horses, cattle, sheep, pcits, furs, butter, cheese, lard, grass and cl jver seeds ; indeed, the surplus of all kinds. The trade is now quite large and already the produce is being brought over to this side. It is but a few years since the reverse was the case—most, if not all of the above articles were taken to Canada. Yankee immigration is the cause of the change.— Watertown Jeffersonian. The improvement.- though simple in c«mstiuction, is the result of a long course*of experiments, attended w 1 1h much labor and expense. It is now believed to he perfect, and has thus far met the approbation of all who have examined it. The advantages consist principally in strengthening the fore part of t he carriage, enabling it to be turned in h-ss than one third the space required by the old construction, without interfering; with the body of the carriage, and greatly facilitating the getting in and out—heretofore considered a very great objection to fuui-wheeled vehicles. 13y the adoption of this improvement, large fore wheels may be used.
