•MI ■ ■ - I I X 1 * — • * '&«>.• — - r - ' * » ’ • > « j ^ f V i G e t t in g H ig u .— The Rev. John Pierpont, tells how it is done, as fol low s :— The sturdy oak full many o cup Doth h«*!d up to the sky T o catch the min, then drinks it up, And,thus the oak gets high — By having water in its cups; And so must you and I. / M r s . S w if s h e l m on D an cin g . , One curious fact w e have observed with regard to dancing.— This is, the more deeply, a chnrch or individual professor is steeped in the spirit of money grabbing or intemperance, the greater is the ab horrence o f dancing. This appears to be a kind, o f convenient scapegoat on which the yins o f ijie congregation are laid, that they may be borne to the wilderness. Let the preacher at any time submit to a gag which shall, on some special accasioo, forbid his opening his month for the dumb, or reproving a1 wealthy distiller, or fat usurer, who grinds the poor to pay the pew rent, and forthwith w e get a fresh anathema on dancing. Show us a wealthy deacon’s wife who will haggle with a widow to get washing done for twelve and a half cents a dozen, and then pay her in trade, or give her two dimes ami four coppers for txvonty-five cents, and we will show you one who will take a spasm over the iniquities o f a cotillion. We never knew the rule to fail, and have, watched its workings for so long that whenever any one begins a lecture on dancing we sus pect him or her of being a worshipper o f mammon. Old Christian in his long journey danced for jo y , but the man with the muck rake was too.busy. Nothing appears better calculated to contend with the hard, money-loving spirit of our age than music and dancing. It tends to melt the hard crust which the dust of ledgers forms around the hearts o f our people, and thre is no place to which we should go with a subscription paper, for charitable objects, with more hope o f success than a social p?uty where . all were dancing to the music of two * .. ___ good violins and a trombone.*— P itts burg Visitor, 0 ^ V ictor H u g o estimate* the annual cost o f maintaining the standing armies o ^ of E u rope at five hundred millions of dollars.. This outlay would, in a veiy few years, pay ofl every national debt of Europe. In a few yems more, it would, if wisely expended, so equalize the popu lation o f the globe, by agreut system of emigration, that every man might have a fair opportunity Vo earn a competence by his labor. In a levV moie, it would place educational systems on suchaba- sis and with such a scope, that the sub stance o f all ihe important knowledge in the possession o f mankind might be imparted to all. In a iexv- years more, the area, o f civilization and Christianity might be enlarged, till it embraced the habitable earth, and Christendom would mean the W o r ld . But the wisdom to administer so large a sum for any hut diabolic purposes, has not yet appeared among men. A n O l d S a l t — Capt. Tucher an old East Indiaman, often elicited remarks from his acquaintances on his appear ance, as he invariably'kept his ‘ oauti- cals’ on in port as well as at sea. On one occasion, while in Bombay, a friend, eyeing his pea-jacket and sou’-wesler, said ;— 1 Captain, why. don’ t you spruce up while in pent }* ‘ O h ,’ said the Captain, ‘ nobody knows me here.’ * T h e ship in due course of time arriv ed in Boston harbor, and the Captain, sauntering upNhe wharf in his old duds, was met by a friend who asked him the same question, ‘ Oh, my dear fellow,* was the reply, * everybody knows me here.’ G a r d e n W a l l s op G lass . — Charles E w ing, a gardiner in Anglesea, Eng., has conceived the idea of constructing garden walls o f glass and iron only,— T h e plan is to have iron uprights firmly fixed into the ground, and faced with glass on both sides, the space between the tw o faces being occupied by trees planted and trained in the usual way.— T h e glass is all movable, so that perfect ventulation as well as perfect shelter, is secured.
