I Temperance—The Maine Law. . The Temperance banner is unfurled with new devices blazoned upon it, in some o f our cities and throughout our entire State. A remarkable spectacle can be seen in the streets o f the city o f Portland. Temperate men, and nothing but temperate men, walk her streets.— N o places are open to sell strong drink, end there are no visible signs ol intoxi cation. A strange quiet prevails. The clamor, and rioting, and fierce turbulence o f drunkenness are no where seen. It is strange. Probably in no other State can just this condition of things be found. What a noble spectacle, could the eye be gladdened always by the sight of even one. city thoroughly redeemed from the curse inflicted by strong drink. Blessed will this beautiful town be among the cities of our broad land, if she holds fast the faith she has professed, and continues the example she has o f late exhibited. Right legislation, sustained by right public sentiment, has done this. W e will not discuss the provisions o f the law, or even insist now upon the ptinci- ple which it embodies. It is well en ough, however, to understand what has been effected by that act of legislation, and to bear in mind the course of action which it traces for the future ; and also to give some heed to the demonstrations which are made and which are prepar ing among ourselves, to carry out the same principle, and enact, if possible, similar statutes for the state o f New Y o r k — not excepting (this time) the city.— N. Atmospheric electricity often traverses in wires, causing brief interruptions; but on Monday evening there was evidently another element at work. Strong magnetic currents seemed to pass from the ground into the wires, at times so powerful as to overcome the batteries on the line, and reverse, the magnetic poles, making queer work, and causing some perplexity among the opera tors. The magnetic currents o f the earth were evidently joining in the merry' dance o f their brilliant partners in the sky. So powerful was this disturbing influence upon the wires that neither o f the three telegraph lines between Boston and New York, were able to operate through,dur- ing that evening. J . D ., No II, North Eighth street, Philadelphia, Pa. This is a truly wonderful remedy for Indices* tion, Dyspepsia , Jaundice , Liver Complaint , Constipation, and Debility, Curing after Nature’s own method, by Nature’s own agent, the Gastric Juice. (CT Half a te jspoonful o f this Fluid, infused in water, will digast or dissolve, Five Pounds o f Roast B e e f in about two hours , out of the stomach. D i g e s t i o n . Digestion is chiefly performed in tho stomach by tbe aid o f a fluid which freely exudes from the inner coat o f that organ, when in a state o f health, called the Gastric Juice. This fluid is the Great Solvent of the Food, the Purifying. Preserving, and Stimulating Agent ofthe stomach and intes tine*. Without it there will be no digestion,— no conversion o f food into blood, and no nutrition, of the body; but rather a foul, torpid, painful, and destructive condition o f the whole digestive ap. paratus- A weak, half dead, or injured stcmach produces no good Gastic Juice, and hence the disease, distress and debility which ensue. f P e p s i n a n d R e n n e t . Pepsin is the chief element, or great Digesting Principle of the Gastic Juice. It is found in great abundance in theeolid parts of the human stomach after death, and sometimes causesthe stomach to digest itself, or eat itself up, It is also found in the stomach of animals, as the ox, calf, &c. 11 is the material used by farmeis in making cheese, called Rennet, the effect of which has long been the special wonder of the dairy. The cuiding of milk is the first process o f digestion, Rennet pos. sesses astonishing power. The stomach of nealf will curdle nearly one thousand times its own weight of milk, Baron Liebig states that “ One part of Ihe Pepsin dissolved in sixty thousand parts of water, will digest meat and other food.*’ Diseased stomachs produce no good Gastric Juice, Rennet or Pepsin. To show that this want may be perfectly supplied, we quote the following S c i e n t i f i c E v i d e n c e : BARON LIEBIG, in his celebrated woikon Animal Chemistry, says; “ An Artificial Diges tive Fluid analogous to the Gastic Juice, may be readily prepared from the mucous memb*'ance of the stomach of the Calf, in which various articles of food, as meat and eggs, will be softened, chang ed, and digested, just in the same manner as they would in the human stomach.” DR. PEREIRA, in his famous treatise on “ Food and Diet,” pubfised by Fowler andWells, New York, page 35, states the samo great, fact, and describes the method o f preparation. There are tew higher authorities than Dr. Pereira. DR. COMBE, in his writings on the,4Physiolo- gy o f Digestion,” observes that “ a diminution of the due quantity of the Gastic Juice is a promi nent and all-prevailing cause of Dyspepsia,” and he states that e‘ a distinguished professor o f medi cine in London, who was severely afflicted with this complaint, finding every thing else to fail, had recourse to the Gastic Juice, obtained from the stomach of living animals, which proved com pletely successful.’* DR. GRAHAM, author of the, famous works on “ Vegetable Diet,” says : “ it is a remarkable fact in physiology, that the stomachs o f animals, macerated in water, impart to the fluid the pro perty o f diesolving various articles o f food, and of effecting a kind of artificial digestion o f them in no wise different from the natural digestive process,” A s a D y s p e p s i a - C u r e r . DR. HOUGHTON’S preparation of PEPSIN has produced the most marvellous effects, curing cases of Debility, Emaciation, Nervous Decline and Dyspeptic Consumption, supposed to be oh the very verge of the grave. It is impossible to give thedetails of cases in the limits of this adver tisement—but authenticated certificates have been given o f more than Two H u n d r e d R em ark able C u r e s , iu Philadelphia, New York, and Boston alone. I m p o r t a n t t o C l e r g y m e n . [From Ihe Rev. Owen Thomas, Holyhead.] Dear Sir— Dr. Locock’s Wafers do a great deal of good tn my voice. I got a bad cold from a dump bed about thirty-five years ago, and my voice was very bad ever since, giving great pain to me when preaching or singing—and 1 am very fond of singing. 1 used many different medicines and some of them did ine good for a little time}; but Dr. Locock’s is the best of all— it clears my voice and stops the coughing instantly. I have never found anything to compare with it. I have been 33 years a Wesleyan minister, and all the Wesleyan Methodists in the principality know me; 20 years of which 1 spent at H olyhead: and I am personally known to all the first men ofthat body, many o f whom have admired the ef fects of the Wafers in clearing the voice and stop ping the cough—they never get such medicine be fore. My wife, ever since Christmas, has been very well after taking two boxes. I am a witness of their power to stop a frightful fit of coughing in an instant. 1, as a Wesleyan preacher, cal! on all preach ers and singers of every denomination to take these Wafers for improving the voice and curing coughs. You may publish my testimonial for the excel, lent Wafers if you wish. I urn truly yours, OWEN THO vlAS. I m p o r t a n t C a u t i o n . I do hereby caution the public against buying or using a spurious and worthless medicine man ufactured by James Bryan, Rochester. The improvement, though simple in construction, is the result of a long course of experiments, attended with much labor and expense. It is now believed to be perfect, and has thus far met the approbation of all who have examined it. The advantages consist principally in strengthening the fore part of the carriage, enabling it to be turned in less than one third the space required by the old construction, without interfering with the body of the carriage, and greatly facilitating the getting in and out—heretofore considered a very great objection to four-wheeled vehicles. By the adoption o f this improvement, large fore wheels ma y be used. E. & C. EVERETT, Patentees, Washington, D. C.
