% s From the Home Journal. T h e V illag e of G eneva. A m o n g th e m a n y pleasant and h e a lthy residences in W e s tern N ew York, the beau tiful village of Geneva stands pre-eminent; and now that it can he reached, by means of the New York and Erie Railroad, in thirteen hours from the great metropolis of the State, and from Albany by the Central Railroad, in seven hours, it cannot fail to be much re sorted to, not only as a delightful summer residence, but as the permanent home and families who have children to educate, of especially those who are restricted to a moder ate income. Properly is l°w there, and good houses, with spacious gardens and excellei t fruit, may be rented at two hundred dollars a year, or can be purchased at proportionate rales. Many of the most respectable families, in cluding the Professors in the College, pro fessional men and other*, live well on salaries and incomes varying from eight hundred to fifteen hundred dollars a year. The best fire wood can be purchased at from two dollars and fifty cents to two dollars and seventy- five cents a cord. Fresh butter, of the best quality, is usually sold at from twelve and a half to fourteen cents a pound ; eggs at ten cents a dozen, with meals and other eatables proportionately low. fn addition to several School:; for hoys and girl*, there is a College with both academical and medical departments, the Professorship' in which are tilled by men of great wortli and high literary and scientific attainments, \vho, of course, exert an influence upon the social circle, always tending to elevate and refine. In this College, upon the suggestion of one of its trustees, (in 1825.) \vn< first established an English department, under the same Professors with the Classical depart ment, which has been continued there to the present time, and has since been adopted by some of the other Colleges in tins State and in New England—thus obviating the objec tion of exclusiveness so long made against the higher seminaries of learning. The term bills at Geneva College do not exceed forty- six dollars a year, including tuition, room- rent, and all other charges. Hoarding in re spectable families can be obtained at from two dollars to two dollars and lifts cents a week, and at the best hotels at from two dol lar! and fifty cents to three dollars a week. The population c f Geneva is about five thousand, who may be described as an intel ligent, respectable, church-going people. There are several laige and well-built church ed fires of the Episcopal, Pn sbyte- riau, Dutch Reformed, Methodist, and other denominations. The Episcopal Church, which is built of stone, is a beautiful speci men of Gothic architecture, with windows of stained glass. This may be regarded as lie metropolitan church of the diocese of West ern New York, and the Bishop, the lit. Rev. Win, il. De Laticey, resides in the village. Geneva is beautifully situated on the west bank of the Seneca Lake,, which i$ forty miles long, and varying from two to four miles in width. This lake is entered by three of the State canals, viz,; the “ Cayuga and Seneca,h the “ Crooked Lake,” and the 44 Chemung.” The water is remarkably pure, and, owing to its great dtipth, never freezes. The steamboats running between Geneva and Jefferson, at the head of the lake, make the daily trips with as much punctuality in winter as in summer, and ul least one of these boats, the Ben LoJer, may well be classed, both as to size and speed, with the best now afloat on any of the- wat ers of this State, with accommodations in ferior to none. This beautiful boat, with all its furniture and equipments, is the work of mechanics residing in the village, and furn ishes a truthful advertisement of their taste and skill, The engine only was made at the West Point Foundry. The boilers, which are of a peculiar construction, were made at the works of the intelligent ami enterprising proprietor, John R. Johnson, E<q. These are upright, and, of course, occupy much less room, which alone is an important recom mendation : but they possess other advan tages over the ordinarv builders, ajul, although introduced by Mr. Johnson against the op inion of a number of practical engineers it, is gratifying to know that his anticipations h e r e b e e n fuliy real»<?cd, a m i th a t tiicc’e Uvit- ers will now, doubtless, pass into general u*e. The fuel may be c/;her wood or coal; ilie Bloesburg coal is the kind now used, and ,exvers every purpose. Owing to the influence, in. winter, of lb open lake, the temperature of which is -vvnvs nhnvft frepy.imr. the climate of Gel LOTS FOR SAiLE. The gardens on the east side of Main street me strikingly picturesque and beautiful, hy be ing terraced to the lake, the descent being nearly one hundred feet. I have already said that the inhabitants of Geneva are in telligent and respectable. 1 will now add, that there probably is no village in the State where the impress of refinement and cultiva tion is more distinctly marked. I might go on to say much more of this delightful spot, this oasis, not of a desert, hut of as rich, fertile, and beautiful a tract of country as any on this continent. But I will reserve this for another occasion, in which I purpose to say something of the farms and fine wheat-iands of this garden of the State of New York. z. Neio York , Ju n e , 1851. Owen Thnnins, Holyhead.] D ear Sir— Dr. Locock's W a fers do a g reat deal of good to my voice. I got a bad cold from n dam p bed about thirty-five years ago, ond my voice was very bad ever since, giving great pain to me when preaching or singing— and 1 am very fond of singing. I u*ed many different medicines and some of them did me good for a little tiinej; but Dr. Locock's is the best of all— it clears my voice and stops tlie coughing instantly. I have never found anything to com p a re with it. 1 have been 33 years a W esleyan minister, and all the W esleyan M ethodists in tho principality know me; 20 years of which I spent at H olyhead: and I am personally known to ull the first men ofthat body, many of whom have admired the ef fects of the W a fers in clearing the voice and stop- ping the cough— they never get such medicine be fore. My wife, ever since Christm as, has been very well after taking two boxes. I am a witness of their power to stop a frightful fit of coughing in an instant. 1, n* a W esleyan preacher, call on all preach ers and singers of every denomination to take these'W a fers for improving the voice and curing coughs. You may publish my testimonial for tho excel, lent W a ters if you wish. 1 am truly yours, O W E N T H O M A S .
