Business was dull yesterday and the hotel and stand owners and em p loyes wore all equally interested in the event and had the tim e to show i t W h en two Coney Island Cencourse backs rolled up in regal splendor botore the door of J o sep h W^oiss' pavilion, on Surf avenue, the crowd th a t gathered around was such as could gather only at Coney Island, and included those of every age and clim e. They allowed but little room for the prospective bride and groom to pass out to the barouches, w h o se drivers checked them selves in a sadden desire to shout out: *'Going right aw a y; 6 cents each; no charge (or c h ildren,” and resumed a dignity belonging only to the hackm en of Niagara F a lls a n d of Coney Island when they know they have a good thing. Down Surf avenue w ent the two hacks form ing the proceesion and containing the happy couple, the rabbi, the intim a te friends of the bride a n d Justice Anthony Waring, whose lack of a m n atache gave him a severely clerical ap pearance. The party disem b a rked at Schlffm a n ’s, on th e Sea Beach W alk. The scent of sausages had been subdued for the occasion, and high on a tem p o rary platform were four H u n garian m u si cians whose violins shrieked out a national m e lody as the party entered. Mr. Sebiffman had turned a part o f the kitchen into a wedding parlor, with palm s and flowers. Two candles sputtered on a sm a ll table which also held wines for use in the ser vice. Overhead had been spread the s k y blue canopy under which all orthodox w eddings a re celebrated, held up by a string attached to a prosaic gas fixture. Dr. Mono then rested him s e lf with his robe o f office a n d intoned a prayer, after which J u s tice W aring perform ed one of the preudest acts of h is life, according to his own statem ent, and with becom ing dignity performed the m a rriage service according to the statute in such case m ade and provided. The fact that that the contracting par ties did not understand English didn’t weaken the effect, for he convinced them by tho m otions of m outh of the force of bis language. Then the HabbI performed the Jew iso cerem o n y in Ger m a n and Hebrew. H e had a geod voice, and In toned tho Hebrew ritual finely. The couple have not been long In this country, and having no pa rents living were given to each other, the groom, Jam e s Sebonwetter, by Joseph W eiss, and the bride, Lina W ertheimer, by Mrs. W eiss. The bride wore a pale gray satin and a w reath of orange blossom s supporting a tu lle vail. After the cerem ony there was general osculation, but Justice W aring m issed his chance of kissing because he was nervous about the etiquette of Hebrew weddings. He w ill not be fooled the n e x t tim e. The party afterward sat down to a dinner in which H u n garian dishes were plenty, but before thoy touched them each ate a part of a b ig twist 1 >af three feet long and broad in proportion and w eighing about ten pounds. After the supper there was s p e ech m a k ing and singing by Justice W aring, Jam e s J. Powers, Mr. G. Goldm an, Dr. Mono, and dancing was had to weird Hungarian m u sic. Tho m coling was called to take action on the resigna tion of Uio pastor, the Rev. Jesse W. Brooks, and it w'ould require the ability of a P h iladelphia law y er to determ ine just how tho m atter stands. A resolu tion expressing confidence in tho pastor and re questing that no change in the pastorate be m a d e w.'vi adopted, but after that tho m oderator ruled that no action had been taken on the resignation of tho pastor, and that it w a s still before the body for action. The church trouble is w e ll known toth o p u b H c Tho pastor was requested by tbo trustees to tender his rosignatioD. Ho did so and it w a s accepted. Then a council of the Congregational churches was held, and tho council cam e to the conclusion that tho action of tho Board of T rustees was un warrantable, a s th e / had no authority to call or dism iss a pastor, and that the usurpallon of au thority was loo serious a m a tter to bo overlooked; and, also, that the vote to accept the rosignatiou was taken at a m e e ting of the church and society, w h ile it should have been taken at a m o e ilug of tho m em b ers of tho church only. Ou these grounds the council refused to dism iss Pastor Brooks, and recom m onded that the m em b ers of the church should m eet their pastor for conference and dis cussion. Mr. Brooks callod a m eeting for discus sion last week, but a s It was not callod In tho reg ular way, tho m em b ers refused to discuss the m at ter aud last night’s m eeting, called regularly, was the result. Moderator Cook presided- aud Church Clerk Henderson recorded. After the decision of the council was road, Air. Athens offered the resolution e x p r e ssing ooufidonco in the pastor aud requesting that there bo no change in the paatoralo. Air. T u ttle objected to the reso lution, aud said he had spoken to several inombors of the council, and all agreed that the matter was returned to tho church m erely because of the Irregularities in accepting tho resignation. Ho reasoned that i f a vote asking the pastor to stay was carried m any of tho active m em b ers of the church would resign, and that if tho pastor was asked to go there would bo m a n y mornbors dissatis fied. He saw in tliis breach a calam ity from which tho churcli would never recover. To avoid this and also to avoid the possibility of its being said that they had railroaded tUoir pastor out of the church when he had noplace to go to, a prom inent m em b er of tho couucil had suggested to Mr. Tuttle that It would bo well to ask tho pastor to tender his resig nation, to take effect Novem b er 1. Mr. Tuttle thought such an action would satisfy all parties, but Clerk Henderson said there was anoihoE question to settle first, and tlial was w h ether or not the pastor's resignation w a s still before them to bo acted upon. Park Com m issioner Easton, who is one of tlie Board of Trustees of the church, asked to bo per m itted to s p e a k on the subject, and being granted porraissiou ho said: Tbo council that acted on this whole m atter was an export one and was held on behalf of the pas tor. They s a y they can find no reason for a disso lution. Do they m ean by that that they know more of the history of this trouble thau wo do? They say the Board of Trustees did what it should not have done. I em p h a tically deny th a t The trus tees in the kindest Christian spirit sim p ly sug gested that tho pastor should resign, and tor doing this to bo stigm a tized by the council as a band of usurpers is an outrage on Christian gonilem o n . Wo took such action for tho best interests of tho church. Air. Brooks does not own this church. It is the Church of Jesus C h r ist T h e suggestion to resign was m ade in the kindest spirit, aud If it had boon a ccepted as it was offered there would Lo no occasion for this mooting. W h at the result of a division of the m em b ers of the church would be is not known, but wo should do our duty. The Board of Trustees was r ight in deciding that It would be bolter should tho pastor resign. I am sorry to do 80 , but 1 move as a substitute to the other resolu tions offered that we accopt the r e signation of Jesse W. Brooks.” A long debato relating to the pastor’s resignation followed, and tbo moderator ruled that the resig nation was still before the body. A motion to lay Air. A tbeu’s resolution on the table was m a d e and a rising vote was called for. The votes of Sisters AlcUluue a n d Evans were protested. It was claim ed that the ladies had been granted letters ©f with drawal from tho church. The ladies adm itted that such was tho case, but that thoy, as they had given tho letters to tho pastor, claim ed m em b ership in Ills church. When, after a long discussion, tho moderator perm itted the ladies to cast their votes against tho motion to lay the resolution on tho table the friends of the pastor broke Into h earty applause, which shocked Air. Easton and brought from his lips a robuko. Twonty-flvo persons voted against laying tho resolution on the table and but nineteen voted in favor of so doing. Then tho motion on the resolution e x p r e ssing confidence In the pastor and asking that there be no change in the pastorate was put, and the resolution w a s adopted by a voto 24 to 19. W h en tbo vote had been announced Air. Brooks said he wished to know what tho m inority intended to do and suggested that as the m a tter of r e signa tion was at last settled It would be a s w e ll to hold the little conference that had boon suggested by the couucil. He added that be would like to hear from Air. T u ttle and that gentlem a n said there was noth ing for him to do, as he boUevod the pastor should tender his resignation, to take effect Novem b er 1. Air. Brooks was astonished at this and said ho did not kuow where bo stood if after the voto just taken bo was still asked to resign. He believed ho had anticipated a little program m e. “Mr. T u ttle,” he added, “is m o rally bound to subm it to 14© m ajority, Thoro are but nineteeu here who wish m e to go away. If the m ajority so desired I should have tendered m y resignation.*’ Moderator Cook—Your resignatiou h a s not boon acted upon a s yet. Air. Brooks—Then what, under th e sun, did this vote m ean? Many people spoke at the s a m e tim e. The pastor declared that bis resignation had certaluiy boon disposed of. Mr. Buckiugham m oved that the pas tor be requested to withdraw bis resignation. The pastor said there was no resignatiou to withdraw. Air. T u ttle said that Dr. Tngersoll had told him the council bad disposed of the resignation, while an equally promluont m em b er of tho council said it- had not. Pandem o n ium reigned for a few m inutes, and in the m idst of the hub nub a m o tion to adjourn was m ade and put through with a rush before the question was settled. CRUSHED IX k FK RBl BACK.
