T h e diarrhon, w h e th e r it be regarded as a prem o n itory s y m p tom o f s p e e d y a ttack , or w h e th e r it is th e actual com m e n c e m e n t of th e disease itself, is only a m a n ifestation that N a t u r e h a s com m e n c e d her efforts to rem o v e from the s y stem th e causes of th e disease. S h o u ld w e give opiates, soporifics, th e know n effects of w h ich are to lessen o r destroy th e na tu r a l a c tion and m o tion of the living fiber, th e n a tu r a l peris taltic m o tion of the intestinal canal, so necessary to carry off from th e bodv th e m o r b id m a tter w h ich is th e cause o f d is ease ? T h e least particle ot com m o n sense is all thut is necessary to enable all to reply to these interrogatories. T o check th e relaxed state o f the bow e ls , u n d e r circum s tances like these, is a m iserable practice, and show s conclusively th e ex tr e m e ignorance o f those w h o ad v ise it. A ll m e d ical m e n know that opium dim inishes all th e secretions an d ex cretions o f the system . T h e e v a c u a tions, a f ter taking o p ium are clay-colored, ow ing to a n alm o s t totnl_ s u spension o f t h e biliary s ecretion. I t dim inishes th e s e n s ibility ol th e stom a c h and bow e ls , w h ich leads to a suspension, partial o r total, o f all th e regular a c tions of t h e body.
