In January 1832, when thirty buildings were burnt, thefirewas- again ancsted at the same house, by blowing- tip a kitchen on the same spot! And'now this building has. been again preserved under \ similar circumstances, having, besides the* above, been in imminent danger from two Oth- er fires. Nor do »c think it either improper' or indelicate to remark here, that in everyin^ stance, the fortunate escape was mainly attri- butable to the presence of mind, the calmness,^ the colleetedncss, and preserving energy of Mrs. STI ART herself—3 lady, whose uniform conduct on such occasions, forms an admira- ble contrast to that of many of those who boast themselves the..'lords of creation.'— This is the only distinction we can permit our-' seh es to draw, for none can deem it invidious.\ London now measures seven and a half miles in length from east to west, by a bieadth of five miles from north to south.— Its circumference, allowing for various ine- i|ii .lilies, i; estimated at thirty miles, while the area of ground it covers it is considered to measure no less than eighteen rniles- si|uare. The corner stone of the University of N. York, about to be erected in Washington* Sipiare, was to be laid on Tuesday afternoon at .\5 o'clock. An address was delivered by the Chancellor of the Institution. A_ New-York paper states that the .amount of duties secured at the Custom House in , that city for the last cniarter of the current year was about $5,500,000, and that since the present law went into operation t»# monthly amount has been about one milli6B of dollars. The business of manufacturing books, is growing in diis country, to a magnitude-of which many persons are little aware.
