A26 » THE LONG-ISLANDER » APRIL 26, 2018 Softball trumps crosstown rival for first win The Huntington High School soft- ball team won its first game of the season last week when it edged Half Hollow Hills East, 8-6. The Blue Devils scored twice in the first inning and pushed another run across the plate in the second inning. Leading 6-5, Huntington scored two more times in the top of seventh to move ahead, 8-5. Sophomore Anna Wickey went 3- for-4 with a trio of doubles in the game I ighth grader Maddie Bavaro had an RBI single Junior Maya Del- Giudice picked up the win on the mound. The Blue Devils are coached by John Walsh and Jim Byrnes. Emma Greenhill's six goals carry Huntington The Huntington girls' lacrosse team desperately needed a win at Com- mack last Thursday afternoon and the Blue Devils got it, defeating Cougars, 14-8, on their home field. Senior Emma Greenhill starred with six goals to pace the Blue Devils. She also had seven self-draws and won 15-of-24 faceoffs. \It was a great team effort,\ she said. \We all knew that it was time to step up and get the win. We all put in a full 50 minutes, which was our goal for the game and it definitely paid off.\ Huntington led at halftime, 8-4. The victory improved the Blue Dev- ils' record to 5-2 halfway through the season. Isabella Piccola had four goals and an assist. Abby Maichin notched three goals and a pair of assists. Sarah Agrillo had a goal and an as- sist. Amber Stieve and Marissa Stafford also had assists in the game. Huntington goalies Maya Santa- Maria and Megan Bacik recorded four saves each. Nat Amato scores game-winner Nat Amato's goal with 11 seconds remaining in the game broke a 7-7 tie and propelled the Huntington boys' lacrosse team to an important victory at William Floyd on April 18. Freddie Amato dodged and passed the ball across the field to his brother, Nat, who put the step-down shot past Floyd goalie Andrew Brust for the game-winner. \We played a good game,\ said sen- ior Anthony McDonald, a defense- man and a team captain. \Our defense has really stepped up this season and played big again today. We still have a lot to work on, but we are moving in the right direction.\ The Blue Devils took a 7-4 half- time lead, but Floyd rallied for three unanswered third period goals to tie the score. There things stayed until the Amato brothers teamed up to break the deadlock. Freddie Amato tallied three goals and an assist in the game. Luke Luckow had a goal and an assist. Nat Amato, Ryan Gorecki, Alex La- Bella, and Jordan McCoy each had one goal. Pat Durand had an assist. Huntington goalie Sam Bergman recorded 16 saves. The Blue Devils are coached by Andrew Gutierrez, Joe Trezza and Ju- lian Watts. Helmet wraps are sports decals. Almarco, Christopher's, Neraki Greek Mediterranean Grill, New York Panini and Samuri donated the wraps, which are valued at around $300. Donation to Loughlin Scholarship Fund Huntington School Board members recently accepted a $500 donation from the Loughlin family and cred- ited it to the Donald A. Loughlin Founders Award fund. The late Loughlin founded the The Blue Devils softball team celebrates last week's win. Huntington High School boys' lacrosse program in the mid-1950s. He coached the program through its earli- est seasons before becoming an assis- tant principal and eventually moving upstate to become a principal at Sperry High School in Rush-Henrietta. Josh Bailin wins in straight sets The Huntington boys' tennis team evened its overall record to 4-4 by serving its way past visiting Kings Park, 5-2. The Blue Devils received many inspired performances during the match, including one by freshman third singles player Josh Bailin, who won in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0. Huntington is coached by Jamie Fishlow. HALE HOLLOW E Several Half Hollow Hills athletes were recently hon- ored for their achievements by local legislators. Legislators Susan Berland (D-Dix Hills), pictured right, front-row, and Tom Don- nelly (D-Huntington Sta- tion), pictured right, kneel- ing, visited the high schools East and West athletes to de- liver proclamations. Members of High School East's Suffolk- and Long Is- land-championship winning boys basketball team were honored, as were members of both high schools' wrestling, swimming, track and field, and gymnastics for earning Champion Awards from New York State Public High School Athletic Association.
