You gota real sense of how much Vin Altebrando meant to so many.\ In addition to teaching full time at Whitman, Altebrando coached the school's varsity wrestling program, coached in Stimson Middle School and youth wrestling programs, and coached athletes involved in Special Olympics. \He was always about putting kids first,\ Wright said. \He said he'd got- ten his accolades, and it was time for him to help kids get theirs.\ Those accolades included a county championshipand trip to the state fi- nal where he was runner up in 1984 as a wrestler for Newfield High School. He was also a star football player His 213 dual-meet wins as a coach earned him a high ranking on the Suf- folk County Wrestling Coaches Asso- ciation list of career wins. He always had a smile that lit up a room.\ The two, alongwith Tracy Hudson, started the Wildcat Sports Camp, a summer program that in addition to involving youngsters in athletics, in- volved older students as volunteers and later as paid employees. \A lot of kids in the district were a part of it. Vin really was the heart and soul of it,\ Fitzpatrick said, adding it was just one way Altebrando \had a huge impact on kids.\ Part of the reason forthat was Alte- brando \always found the good and the positive in kids, and gave them the opportunity to succeed.\ varsity soccer coach John DiGiacomo said \Vinny always welcomed kids into the office, into his circle. \I don't think he knew the kind of legacyhe was leaving.\ A vigil of sorts was to be held Wednesday night at Whitman. In Al- tebrando style, it was to involve a workout. (\He was known to wor kout, sometimes twice in one day,\ Fitzpatrick said.) In celebration of his life, participants were to walk part of the 3-mile run that was part of Alte- brando's daily routine Altebrando is survived by wife Kristie; four daughters Anjelia. Cnonna. Natalie, and Mirabella; brothers Nick and Anthony; and by countless stu- dent-athletes he influenced over the years. As DiGiacomo said, \There's never going to be another Mr. Altebrando.\ Steve Stern defeats Janet Smitelli i in speelal election for Assembly (Continued from page A1) votes, congratulated her opponent in a Facebook post Tuesday night. \I'd like to extend my heartfelt con- gratulations to my opponent Steve Stern upon his victory,\ she wrote. \During this campaign we discussed the issues and got the community en- gaged. I wish him the best of luck.\ Stem attributed the win to the \tremendous work\ of his campaign volunteers, and his \positive message.\ Stern will take his seat in the State Assembly, where Democrats cur- rently hold a 63-seat majority over Republicans. Stern said he is looking forward to \sitting on committees\ and\work- ing to bring state resources\ back to the communities in the 10th district. Stern said he spoke to Speaker of the Assembly Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) following his win and that he will be sworn in Monday upstate in Albany. \I'm looking forward togetting to work right away,\ Stern said. The state's 10th Assembly District has been represented by a Republi- can since 1983, when Toni Rettaliata was re-elected to serve the district's current configuration. The seat was most recently held by Republican Chad Lupinacci, who left the post this year after he was elected Hunt- ington Town Supervisor. The district encompasses much of the western portion of the Town of Huntington, topping out up north in Lloyd Harbor and running south from Cold Spring Harbor along the Nassau border to Melville and parts of East Farmingdale. To the east, the district spans portions of Dix Hills, Elwood and Greenlawn. There are 85,925 activeregistered voters in the district, according to the state Board of Elections.
