HUNTINGTON Annual Marcie Mazzola 5k Race Set For April 22 § By John Grimaldi infoa longislandergroup com The 12th-annual Marcie Mazzola YMCA 5k through Huntington is set for Sunday, April 22. The race will kick off at 8:30 a. m. from the Huntington YMCA (60 Main St.). There will also be a free fun run for kids beginning at 8 a.m., along with raffles, refreshments, sponsor offers and awards throughout the day. The race was established back in 2006 by The Marcie Mazzola Foun- dation to help fund urgently-needed programs and services for local Hunt- ington-area abused and at-risk chil- dren and children in need. Marcie Mazzola, the inspiration for the foundation, died in a car crash at age 21 in 2002. At the time of her death, Mazzola was involved in a civil law suit against a bus driver that sexually abused her when she was 11 years old. Although it was thought at the time of her passing that the case could no longer be won, the Maz- zola family pursued the case with the knowledge that she intended to donate her entire award to help sexually and physically abused children if she won. The Mazzolas won the case and es- tablished the foundation a year later. This year, the YMCA of Long Is- tand announced the \Run for a Cause: YMCA 5k Series,\ of which the Mar- cie Mazzola Sk is a part There will be similar events held in Patchogue and Bay Shore this spring.
