Smltbdas Program of the -Industrial Home for the Blind at their recent meet- ing. John Spanler one member of the community relations team made some Introductory remarks ahout bis truly remarkable companion Robert J, Sniith ' das , for whom the program la named. Mr. Smltbdas , who : Is both dea f and blind since the age of five amazed the mem- bership by his near perfect move- ments and actions considering bis tremendous handicap. Mr. Spanler , who is his constant companion and converses with Sir. Smlthdas by the formation of the letters ot the alphabet with.bis fingers , in- formed the spellbound audience of the outstanding educational achlev- ments of his friend. Among other honors , Mr. Smltbdas , . is the only deaf and blind pernor in the world to attain a Masters degree from an accredited university. * Mr. Smltbdas spoke about the recreational and educational facil- ities of the Burrwpod home for the blind , located near Huntington. Miss Foley ' s fourth grade had a movi-e Wednesday, March 16 about the desert. They made It themselves. Everyone had a story to write about the Na valio desert or the Arabian desert, and the plants and' animals in the desert. They also made pictures about their story. If their story was about the Arahian desert -th ey dressed like Arabs , and if their story was about the Navaho desert they ' dressed like Navahos. Miss Foley ' s class had been working on the movie for a long time. Miss Foley helped the children put the movie together. The movie was held In th eir classroom at 1:15 and at 2 o ' clock , two classes at a time saw it. * * » • Larkfleld Intramura l Sports Intramurals came to a close with Mr. Worm ' s class winning the A League; Mr. Jennings ' class ¦won the B League and -Miss Ar- rlgo ' s class won the C League. In the C League Mrs. Zabowskljs class fought hard and won an overtime game by scoring 6 points to SIlss Coldon ' s class 2; final score 12-10. Mrs. Zabowski' s clas s also scored 4 points in an overtime to defeat aiiss Foley ' s class 15-11. The same class also scored 3 points to defeat Miss Asp-den ' s class 19-16 in an over- time period. In the B League the most excit- ing game was when Mr. Jennings ' class swamped Mr. Lacouette ' s class 23-13. This game was for the i championship. Conlclfn , of Mnln Street , met with n painful accident on Friday while ho was doing some plumbing work at the Mink Fnrm in Coromnek. He was working- in H small enclosure when a blow torch fell over , sotting fire to his clothing. Ho managed to get out of the enclosure but then the wind fanned the blaze and some of his clothing was burned off ot htm and one leg badly burned from the ivalst clown. More than 60 boys brought their parents to show them around the room, now equipped with a tele- vision set , game tables , doshs nnd chairs which were* donated by local business firms and Individuals. The official opening of the club- room marked the beginning of the second year ot the organization which now has 178 members from 10. to 16 years of age. The boys have formed hobby groups , gone on campin g trips , and to major League oallgames and the circus. -A rifle club Is learning the principles of handling firearms from films and talks ' by members of the police force.
