March 21 , 1955 Mr. Ray R. teighton Chief of Police • . Town of Huntington , New York Dear Mr. Leigh ton: : I reid your letter 'to Angus Mc- Jiityre published ln The Long-Is- lander of March. ' 17. In your letter you were concerned about the suggested police budget for the .proposed Central School District No. 5 village Incorporation. , You stated that ?3 , 500 a year was too low a salary for a police- man. I think you and the Village Incorporation Committee are ln complete agreement on this point. The Village ' . Committee suggest- ed a budget for police salaries ' for a force of 12 men of $50, 000. This comes to about $4 , 165 per year per man , not $3 , 500 per year. Ot cours-e , all men would not be paid the same — some could be paid more , some less than $4 , 165 per year , depending upon experience and ability. I am enclosing a copy of the budget that the Village Committee suggested , since you probably did not have a copy to read before you wrote Angus Mclntyre. One further point: You gener- ously offered to hel p by providing any facts that you coufd concern- ing the operation of your depart- ment. One question that I' m sure many of my neighbors would like to have an answer to Is exactly how many policemen are now as- signed to patrol duty ln that part of Central District No. 5 that lies In the Town of Huntington? I understand that prior to the meeting on incorporation in the Hills School there was only one policeman assigned to all of the Town of Huntington South of Jer- icho Turnpike , which takes in an area larger than our proposed in- corporation. * One further question: Do you agree.that the F.B.I, standards oi two policemen per thousand popu- lation , referred to. by Lieutenant Kohler at the meeting ln the Hills School, are reasonable? If you agree that these stand- ard s are reasonable (and I' m sure you will , since Lt. Kohler said that the Huntington Police , Depart- ment is trying to reach this goal), I think you will , agree that the Village Committee has suggested a police force of the right size for our area. The suggested budget estimated our population at 6,000, and pro- vided for 12 police , or two par thousand population. Any answers you could provide to these questions would be great- ly appreciated. _ ' Sincere , ly, ' ' , ,, : . vJHandall?!' . Mclhtyr£- u^: -< Member , - Central .
