M RUNNING. SUM. IN PROGRESS w ild Sto ry About Home of H. M. Paynter , Jr. , at Hal csitc , Contradicted. . Ever since the capture ot the fonr- mastcd schoon i r Arlo Felice H in Hun tington Har li or , after she had un- loaded her alleged cargo ot 3 , 000 cases of rum for the Xew Year ' s trade , there has been all kind s of rum running stories in this section. If Dame Humor can be beliered , there has been a smaller schooner in the harbor . dur ing the early part of th is week and unloaded' a secon d load of booze in practically the same lo- cality that _ the Arlo Felice Is given - cred it of unloading. Wha tever truth there is , there is no question tha t there have been som e ac tivities along the wa ter front here for cases similar J o those in , wh ich booze is handl ed , as well as the cartons that the bottles are packed in . have been found here washed up by the tide. One of the stories tha t is going the rounds is that to divert suspicion in the han dling of these wet goods, trucks pr heavy motorcars similar to those used-by _ Manhattan depart ment store, and with the name ot the store there ^ on . have , been used to get the liquor out of this section after it was landed. . There was als'J a fast motorcar truck in Huntington yesterday. It has been common talk that a certain type of motorcar has been used for illes m i purpos e s of late and yesterday one ot the taxi drivers saw a machine pass him that somewhat aroused his sus- picions , and . he d ecided to iollo - w it a shor t distance. As a precau tion , he placed his gun on the scat beside him and immediately he saw the head ol a man appear at the rear curtain of the jnac hine.ahead .of him. A short d istan ce beyond the truc k suddenly stopped and ,w hen the taxi driver also j rat on h is brak es, the truck starte d again , dashed down a side road ' ttf- ward Halesite . and d isappeared. The man who was following expr essed him- self as be lieving that the machine In question circled through the Haleaite section , leavin g Huntington via the western route in a decided hurry. The s tory published in one of the Man hattan mornin g dailies to.the ef- fect that \Resthayen . \ the liom a pC Hem y. M. .Pa ynter , Jr., a t Huntington Say had leen _ s e_ by i-n_i runner. ; who had run np a large telephone bill, butcher bill , grocery bill and dr uggist bill , and that Mr. Pa ynter had found a _ __ g e kettl a . o i ooc f st< T T stcam i n s on t he store when he visited the place the previous night; has created a great interest in the. section.in which he re- sided. The ar ticle credited tho un- loadin g of 3,000 cases of champa gne Chr istmas Eve over Mr. Payntcr ' s pri- va te bathing beach. _., k Invest igation at bis home * In what is local ly known as the Pear Orch a rd, ' 't i q ows no footprints with the exception of-the inves tigator ainee-the \ln\' . ol snow a week ago. In terviews with the nearest neigh bors showed t__t there had been no thing what evt - . - to Indicate tha t rum runners or j uyane £lsejiadj>een about the Paynter house since the fami ly left about Novomber Jst ,; and as far as unloadin g tho cham- pagne over their private bathing beach , the Paynter residence , where hi re- s ided all last summer , is at least a mile and a hal f from the Huntington Bay water front. Those who resida in that section do not put much, filth in the glory. HUNT.
