A correspondent of the Times nianifeits strong ly his desire to contribute to a subscription which „ we have proposed in favor of Sir WALTER -SCOTT'S family, begs us to state how he was involved in debts of such groat magnitude as we have stated We thought the facts were universally known/but as we find they are not, we beg to state them irt the words of Sir Walter himself, in the introduc tion of the Chronicles of the Canongate, in the number of the new edition of the Waverley novels which has just appeared i • • ' '' : \I have, perhaps, said enough on former occa- sions of the misfortunes which led* to the dropping of that mask, under which I had, for a long series of years, enjoyed so large a portion of public fa- vor. Through lite success of those literary efforts, I had beenenabled to indulge, most «l the tastes which a retired person of my station might be sup- posed to entertain. In the pen of tips nameless romancer I seemod to possess something like the secret fountain of coined gold and pearls vouch safed to th§ traveller of the eastern tale; and no doubt believed that I might venture without silly imprudence, to extend my personal expenditure considerably beyond what 1 should have thought of, had my means been limited to the competence which I derived from inheritance*,'with the mod* crate income of a professional situation I bought, and built, and planted; and was considered by myself, as by the rest of the world, m the sale possession of an easy fortune. My ri< lies, howev- er, like the other riches of this world were liable to accidents, under which thoy .were ultimately destined to take unto themselves wings and fly a way. Tho year 1825, so disastrous to many branches of industry and commerce,, did not spate the market of literature; and the sudden rum that fell on so many of the booksellers could scarcely have been expected to leave unscathed one whose career hud of necessity connected him deeply and extensively with the pecuniary transactions of that profession. In a word, almost* without orjie note of premonition, I found myself involved .incite' sweeping catastrophe of the unhappy time, and called on to meet the demands of creditors upoh. * v commercial establishments with which my fortunes' \ had long been bound up, to the extent of no less a sum than 120,000/. The autltor, having, how- ever, rashly committed his pledges thus largely to 'the hazards of trading companies, it behooved jiim, of course, to abide the consequences of his con- duct; and, with whatever feelings, he surrender- ed on tho j&stant\ every shred of propprty whieh he had been accustomed to call his own. It'be- camc vested in the hands of gentlemen, wlips>- integrity, prudence, and intelligence, were com- bined with all possible liberality and kindness c-f disposition, and who readily afforded every\'assists nnco townrds the execution of plans, in the success of which the author contemplated tho, possibility of his ultimate extrication, and which Wore of such a naturo that had assistance of this sort' been withheld, lie could have had little pfnipect of car- rying thorn into effect. Among othe'r .'resources which occurred, was the project of that corn)?Ie».e and corrected edition of his novels and .romances (whoso real parentage had,pf necessity beeri^dis- closed at the moment of the commercial convul- sions alluded to) which has now advanced with unprecedented favor nearly to its closer\ ;• • ' (D* It is proposed that Abbofsford, the .resi- dence of tho late Sir Walter Scott, should be PRESERVED to the latest posterity as.Ta public monument of tho respect due from the people of Great Britain, to the greatest writer of thfc age.
