M. was boarded by the crew of a schooner, of about 150 tons, painted black, with a narrow white streak, a large head, with a horn of pjenty painted white, large maintopmast, but no yards <• or sails, upon it, mast raked very much, mairisail very squ&re at the head, sails made with split cjcjth,- r and all new; had two long brass 12 pounders, and a large gun on a pivot amidships, and about seven- - „ ty men, who appeared to be chiefly Spaniards<and mulattoes. As they came on board, they instantly demand- ed money, and drew their knives and threatened us with instant «leath if il was not instantly prMuT ced When they had got it all upon docE, they hailed their schooner, and got out their launch and came and took it on board the schooner, viz: ten boxesr containing $20,000 ; then returned to tho brig a^ain, drove all the crew into the forecastle, ransacked the cabin, overhauling all the chests, trunks, &c. and rifled tny pockets, taking my watch and three doubloons which I had previously put there for safety; robbed the mate of his watch and $200 specie, still insisting that there was morn money in the hold. Being answered in the negative, they beat.mo sevorely over the back, said they knew that theh'o was more, that they should search for it, \aftds^t* they found any, they would cut all our throats.— They continued searching about in every part of the vessel for some time longer* but not fi.ndiag any moro specie, they took .two colls of rigging, a side of leather, and spine other articles, and went on board tho schooner, pfdbably to consult what to do with us—for in 8 or 10 minutes they came hack, apparently in great, haste, shut us all below, fastened up the companion way, fore scuttle and • after hatch way, stove OUF compasses to .pieces in the binnacle, cut away tiller ropes, halliards, braces, and most of our running rigging, cufour sails badly ; look a tub of tarred rope-yarn and what combustibles tlipy could fiud about the deck, put them in the cambeese house and set them oij fire; then lertus, takin^fwJlh tlienfourboat&colors. When they got alongside of the schooner they scuttled our boat, took in their own and made sail, steering to the Eastward. As soon os they left us . we got up out of the cabin scuttle, which they'hud neglected to secure, and extinguished the v fire, which in a few minutes more would have reached the rriainsail and set our masts on fire. . Soon after we sawia ship to leeward, steering to the S. E. the schooner being in pursuit, but did not overtake her whilst she was in sight of us. Loss ojf the John Adams Whaler of Nantucket.- — Letters received at FaVrhaven from the ships Mav- cia and Cordon, of New-Bedford, dated at Su Jago, Aug. 12,1832, communicate tho melancholy intelligence of the loss of the ship John Adams, of Nantucket, together with ull belonging to her, , excepting two individuals, one of whom was the cook. She was run into by a large spermacetti whale, which bad been fastened to by a boat's crow, a short distance from the ship, and sunk al- most immediately after. - , Loss of Ships. —From an examination of Lloyd's list, from the year 1793, to the commencement of 182'.!, it has appeared that the number oi' British I with their preference, and soVicit a continuance on vessels alone lost during that period, amounted, V thonaupnjigo they have so liberally received from] on on average, to no less than one and abalf daily. ,u | 6^*'^^^^,^Genova,an n d thg^ir^ni|y^. OutafSBlslrips-ortheTdfafntiYV of England, lost to the country daring tho period above mentioned, only 160 were laken or destroy- ed by the enemy ; the rest having either stranded or foundered, or having been burnt by accident; a striking proof that the dangers of naval warfare however great, may be far exceeded by tbe storm, the hurricane, the shoal, and all the other perils of the deep. During the last great war in Eu- t rope, 32 British ships of the line went down to , the bottom in tho space of 22-years, besides 70 i 00 gun ships, 86 frigates, and a number of small- er vessels. The navies of the other European powers, France, Holland, Spain and Denmark, were almost annihilated during the same period; so that tho aggregate of their losses must have many times exceeded that of the kingdom of Great Britain. These numbers, wo believe very far exceeded what most people would have suppo- sed. To this immense loss of ships of war and of commerce, the imagination muslTje left to-supply tho incalculable amount of wealth swallowed up with them, and the thousand of human beings who thus found a watery grave.
