FAIR OR FOUL By LAWTON CARVER TNK Spore Waiter NEW YORK, Sept. T- The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are en- gaging in a battle of the schedules and a battle of the pros of varying vintage in remaining games for the American league pennant. The opening of their three-game series before 70,000 at Yankee Sta- dim tonight will start them on their way to a drive through the stretch that may be decided by vagaries of the way the schedule are mwitched around from year to year The Yankees, a great home club and m pretty good one on the road p --» or they would not have held the lead from the first day of the season until now - play al of [ their - remaining 25 gamex at the stadium \The Red Sox, a notoriously . weak road club --- and mepecially weak at TaWrox carres Yaukes Stadium play 1. out . of their remaining 20 games on the roud. He designed and built a marine enging that re- volutionized power-dffven craft and eventually ed his own manufacturing plank in Long Is- land Oity, moving to Freeport later to manufacture. all-copper exhmust manifofds on which his firm, Joseph Van Blerck and Son, hold exclusive patents. During the last World War the firm manu- factured all the exhaust lines and mufflers used on the famous and powerful Elco T boats, which, as history records, played a vital and important part in the con- quest of the Nazis. £00. Marine engines that the elder Van Blerck designed and built were installed on craft that plied the seven seas and practically on every navigable lake and river throughout the world. The United States navy once paid Van Blerck $33,000, his own price, for the plans of a new marire engine he designed. Van Blerck was a rare individual of versatile talent. He built pontoons for the Wright brothers first flying boat, and with Willtam Hacker, designer of the famed Hackercraft speed boats, built the first hydroplane in. the United States. He is remembered by his home neighbor and friend, Guy Lombardo, and the frater- nity of speed boat owners and drivers, in which afrcle his son Jo¢ is an outstanding: performer, JOSEPH VAN BLERCK SR. racing on Lake George. He had several bed spills driving his own powered craft, but was never in- jured. About 10 years ago Van Blerck built in the basement workshop of his Gordon place home a cross- bow with which to bunt sharks out on the ocean, a hobby not gen- erally known outalde of Freeport melghbors. This was a powerful weapon and in his native Holland, he made thousands of crossbows. He was a crack archer and could split a half-dollar at 50 paces. The arrows, made of wood, were an inch thick tipped with an fron point and feathered with turkey feathers, which could penerate an inch of sold planking. Carved from solid walnut, was shaped like a rifle with regulation butt, stock and trigger, The bow, Inseried in the stock, was made of special high tension steal and the bowstring composed of several strands of strong fish line twisted Into a cord about as thick ms the average little finger. Did the weapon \kick\? \Not any more than a rifle,\ Van Blerck told us, adding that in Holland crossbewn were common d shoots were held weekly.
