With trembling hand I strike the mournful lyre, The chords all vibrate to the notes of wo— Damp the bright ardor of poetic fire, And only bid the tear of sorrow flow. Mute is each lively animating string That sweetly echo'd to the strains of joy- When youth—and hope—and love in concert sing, And blend their melody without alloy. All the fond visions of exulting youth, All the bright-cherish'd hopes of manhood's bloom, Alt the endearing ties of love and truth That CADY felt, are buried in the tomb ! Fix'd oa the object of his lov'd pursuit- Onward he prcss'd with firm, tho' humble trust, Nor saw the gath'ring storm, portentious, rise, To lay his prospects with'ring in the dust. Swifl was the whirlwind and severe the storm— His feeble frame could ill sustain the shock ; With faith undaunted and devotion warm, He clung, 'midst all its horrors, to a Rock. The Itock of Ages! there his hopes were staid, While earthly joys receded from bis eye, Faded & fled-rheaven's glories were display'd— The assurance of a blest eternity: Tho' weak, affrighted nature shrunk appall'd At the dread prospect of approaching death— That hour arrived : His dear Redeemer call'd— Without a struggle he resign'd his breath. Could modest worth—could humble, fervent zeal— Could generous warmth, and sympathy of heart— Could talents—youth—or friendship's prayer avail, To stay the unrelenting Tyrant's dart •He had not died I—Tho' to our finite eye Dark and inscrutable the ways of God— »Tis ours to bow submissive to bis will, And bless the band that smites—and kiss the rod.
