Sat Sen. Almost daily dur eseliang'ds come to tts with glowing accounts o f some pie nie, clam hake, or other gatkering of the heavy vrieghts of the country. W e do not attend. The hm-den which we carry with. US and about us is not to be jeered or sneered at by the Calvin Udsons of the present] day, whose hony carcasses serve b u t to- split the northwest breezes which blow chilly these last of- summer ■days about them. We are not envious of these skeletons, and we gaze admiringly ■upon our 'Walstaffan proportions as we face our glass, no—^mirror in the morning ■and heave a sigh for those whose carhon has been expended upon empty air. We need no overcoat these chilly mornings, as we twaddle gracefiiUy to the sanetum; we puff a little, ’tis true, near high nooa, as we sit upon the sunny side of the office, but we laugh with the waning of the sun and continue to—^grow fat. She Never Leaves Him, Look at the career o f a man as he passes through the world; a man visited by mis fortune ! How often is he left by Ms fel low-men to sink under the weight of his afflictions, unheeded and alone! One friend o f Ms own sex forgets Mm, another abandons Mm, a third, perhaps, betrays him ; but woman, faithful woman, follows him in his afflictions with an unshaken af fection ; braves tbe changes of feeling, of his temper, embittered by the disappoint ments of the woi'ld, with the highest o f all virtue; in resigned patience ministers to Ms wants, even when her own are hard and pressing; she weeps over Mm, tear for tear, in his distress, and is the first to catch and reflect a ray of joy, should but one light up his cotmtenanee in the midst of his suffeiings; and she never leaves him in bis misery while there remains one act o f love, duty, or compassion to be per- fomed, And at last, when life and sor- i w come to an end she follows him to the tomb with an ai’dor of affection which death itself cannot destroy. Great Storm. One of the heaviest thunder stoi-ms, ac companied with violent wind, passed over this village last Wednesday afternoon that we have ever witnessed. Trees wen down on Main street, and a part o f the cjwning on the Spring House was blown off. The streets had the appearance of a ' W e learn that a barn belonging to Jlr. P hilip B aeringer , in tbe town of Co lumbia was unroofed, leaving Ms hay and gram exposed to the storm. Hop yards were entirely destryoed in many places, and fences were leveled with the gi’ormd. The damage must be considerable. A thunder storm is suhEme as well as awftil.
