Jaw a il ^awfei. PEOPITS OP D AISY PAEMIHO. The following article in reference to the profits of dairy farming, is furnished to Searth and Mome by J . B . Lyman, agricultural editor of the Tribuneribune. : |.. t generation, two farmers, med Welles, lived one on th e north and the other on the south side of t T | In the la s t generatim brothers, name lorth an d th e oth er on th e soi sid e o f th e road t h a t tends due west from W ethersfield, Conn. Tb( f a t t e n e d f o u r o r fiv e h o g s e a c h t a l l , and spent h u t little. B a t the land grew poorer every season, and they knew of no way to arrest the decline. The product of lye fell away from twenty-five bushels an acre to twenty, snty, I t then lor o f raising seven. 1 to pay it. h u t the ox-eye( crept further into •, and they knew of no way to ex- inemies. The onion garden (ice of the m a n u re; The grass lands were a little better, 'ed daisy and red sorrel jadows each 8. Becanse h is stalls a re cool, sweet- smelling, and well arranged for com posting, the cows are confined there every night in summer. Thus he saves a t least h a lf their droppings in the four a.ummer months. 4. Because the stalls are warm, dry, snug, and supplied with- water, the cows prefer staying there all day in winter, a n d are n eyer chilled b y stand ing in cold yai’ds or by drinking ice- cold water. H e re is a saving in food and manure, and a gain in m ilk. 5. H is stable yields him a profit o f larly seyen dollars a day in winter and inneh more in summer. . W ith this ready money h e can at any time buy a tine cow, a bull with ‘ — - pd tool or ma- hoolc or jour- a life of freedom and a c r e s w h e r e ^ and iatelH- id o u t a scanty live lihood in toil and penury. In n a tural fertility, the farm of M r, W elles is n o t much above the average of Connecticut land. H e and his brother succeed where others fail; they grow rich beside neighbors who year, an pel these en( m u st h ave the choice o f th e m a n u re ; thus only yard-scrapings and winter- leached droppings o f grass fed cows rem a ined for the plow-lots and pota toes. A . f t e r a dozen years steady non- test with this grim enemy, sterility, brother, and went wes't. This about thirty years ago. The price per acre was between thirty and forty dollars, and the paym ents were long, for th e trac t was p ractically a worn- out farm. The brother who remained and assumed the task of making poor land pay for itself, raised onions and onion seed for m arket, from which he realized considerable clear money each year. H e paid off the debt and bought several adjoining and o u tlying tracts, but the m argin of the farm was practically a burden whicb was carri ed b y a few highly manured and profit able acres near the barn. In time tbis farm er died, and tbe iand became the inheritance of his sons, who lived one on the n o rth and th e other on the luth side of the road, just as their ■ forty father and uncle ha d forty years b e fore. The property now comprises three hundred and twenty acres, and the W e lles brothers, instead of eut- tin; ,nd choice seeds. These b rothers read .gricuitural papers, attend shows and fairs, know of all the choice animals within a day’s journey of their farm, and, w h a t is more to the purpose, they keep nice account with their farm and stables, and know whether they make or lose by this or th a t operation, and how m uch they m ake or lose. For some years they h ave added the d a iry business to their farm enterprises, with out dropping the onion and onion seed culture. CarefuUy noting results^ in their dairy, the falling off in milk from this or that cause, the loss o f raa- oaimperfefct ago they built a model co'w-barn. In Iowa the planting of trees is encouraged b y law . E v e r y a c r e of forest trees planted releases taxation for ten years on 8100 valuation, and for each acre of f r u it trees plant ed tax is exempted on fifty dolh valuation for five years ; the same for shade trees and hedges along the high ways. There are now maple forests in several counties, and sugar made, where fifteen years since was nothing but prairie grass and hazel shrubs.
