The follow ing is his story; “ At Syracuse I went to a house with a brick in my hand, and asked the lady if she would please be so kind as to put some butter on it. The request excited her curiosity, and she asked: ‘ ’ Why do you want to' put butter on a brick ?” I told her I was going to eat it. “ Surely,” she said, “ you are not so hungry as to eat a buttered brick ? Come into the house and I will give you food. ’ ’ I bagged a square meal, for which 1 had set so slick a trap. This little boy in jumping off fell and the flesh and muscles of his arm from his shoulder to the elbow passed under the wheels of the ear and were badly crushed. He will probably lose his arm, which will render 'him a.cripple for life. Of all we have said about this recklfiSS and dangerous practice, it seems not to diminish, but to increase. The railroad authorities should have a police stationed at the depot and arrest all who are caught jumping on trains, and lodge them in jail. James ..... \ ‘ 32 AD Despei to find her at her every day Work, twice said plainly in the course of my marks, that “ I was glad they were pres ent on that day.” As to my refusing to allow pupils from any other department of the school, io spend the-afternoon in the intermediate room without they were accompanied hy their parents, or were able to produce a written request from their parents, I have] no apology to make, because I could not conscientiously' do otherwise than to refuse them. I do not believe in allowing the exercises in one department to interfere with the ex ercises in any other, except on special oc- sions. I f tbe pupils were, alio wed, to go from one rooin to another whenevei; they felt inclined, but little advancement would be made in their regular studies. Our rules concerning this have been arbitrarily enforced. If I had known that especial preparation had been made for the exer cises on Friday last, and that a general invitation to attend had been given to the patroHs o f the school, I would prob ably not have been so particular in en forcing our rules, but I did not even know until Friday morning (and then I was in formed of tbe decision of tbe Trustees) that tbe school was to close on that day. We have done all that, could be done to induce the patrons to visit tbe school. A formal visit from a parent on a day When our regular class exercises are at tended to, is such a rarity, that the teach ers hardly know how to receive such a visit. But when such “ spvciat interpo sitions\ have happened visitors have al ways been eordidlly welcomed. And they will be received in the same manner whenever they feel disposed to visit any department of the school. I t ’ is just as much the duty of every patron to visit the school and see whether i t is properly conducted or not, as it is- the duty of the trustees. I am not much of a friend to exhibitions, which consist merely in “ speaking pieces” and singing. A thor ough review and examraation of the class work of tbe term will give a much better proof of what has been accomplished in giving instruction which will be o f prac tical value to tbe pupil when parental care ceases. Tbe poor man or the poor woman who has children in the school, ought to visit it as often as possible, be cause all the capital which they can ex pect to give their children to start life with is a common school education, and bense their obligation to do their duty in this respect is imperative. Our best and most thorough scholars generally belong to the poorer classes, for the simple rea son that they are usually more industri ous than the children of the richer class es, and are more apt to appreciate their Juturo necessities. Let me ask you in this public manner, one and all, to visit your school frequently, and you may, perhaps, have less occasion to find fault with the teacBera, and by thus giving en couragement to both teacheraand taught, you will greatly-enhance the efficiency of your schools.
