Why is it that BO many prefer lounging around ho tels, saloons, &o., when a three minutes walk would take them where they could be instructed and entertained. J — Bob Ingersoll’s lecture did not show up the weak spots in religion. Its own worshippers do that in their cheating and lying, abusing, slandering and fighting each other, running in debt when they know they can never pay, being mean and tricky, cunning, bitter, biggoted and cru el. These are the great baneful facts that make so many enthusiastic over doc trines which teach better things, and where we find men practicing bet( things. Yet, outside of Churches, what ever may be Ingersoli’s religious belief, his large, intelligent and enthusiastic au diences which greet him at every point, show they are not in accord with doctrines whose communicants are made up of the above ingredients. We have too many gilt-edged Christians, tinctured with piety on the surface, while within they are filled v?ifch all manner of uncleanness. Let us have “ Bob” here to teach us our duty as good wives, as good husbands, as good children, and in short as good citizens. Who will be one o f twenty to help defray tbe expenses of such a lecture? — We still hear some old fossils prais ing Brown’s Grammar, and saying it should be used in our schools. The book was written in 1827, and revised in 1851 by Mr. Kiddle, and, as we are informed, never touched since. Daring the past 16 years more progress has been made in teaching the subject than ever made be fore. I t is a learned treatise o f technical ities and complicated nomenclature,' and constructed on philosophical principles, but cannot be applied to our boys and girls, who leave school by the time they ^ e fifteen. 1 do believe that Brown’s Grammar, in tbe language of another, “ has done more to disgrace the teaching o f grammar in our public schools than any oth§r work.” To teach grammar by this bo%k is like taking a work on differ ential caloqlas for instructing our boys and girls in arithmetic. No grammarian can ever make an elaborate system of rules and expect riie literature of our al most grammarless language to conform to it. Brown’s gralpmar is behind the times. Swinton’s Lakguage Series, seem to bo nearer what we want to teach our boys and girls how to compose, put words together and form sentences, as well as to tear down, or, as our grammars have j t , an^yze. It is easier to tear down than build u p ; to analyze, than to compose. To-day the demand is for something prac tical, not dead rules and theories which only impede the child’s progress up the sQmetvhac tedious road to the “ Hill of Science.” Let us place in tbe hands of |;he children either “ Swinton’s Language Lessons,'* pr ‘'Essentials of English Grammar,” by Prof. Whitney, of Yale College, if we wish our pupils to.make the most advancement in language during the few years they can spend in our pub lic schools.
