M ., he being the only member of the personal staff (ex cept the Chaplain) who is retained. — The Thousand Island excursion train passed through this place 5:50 Tuesday morning. I t contained one excursionist from Little Falls, and one from this place, who was Rev. S. 0 . Barnes. H e was well e q d p p e d with saw, hammer, etc., to make some needed improvements on his Thousand Island residence. — I n consequence of the heavy rains th e W e s t Canada Creek and the Mohawk have overflowed, causing considerable damage to the crops. The bridge that spans the hydraulic near the dam has been washed away, and the hydraulic a t th a t point is filled with stone and gravel. Helm er creek overflowed, causing consid erable damage n ear the cheese factory. ' — “ O f all sad things o f tongue or pen, th e saddest are these, *^it m ight have been.’ ” How expressive are the few words above. How true is the im port they bear to onr mind. Mrs. C. J . Fox, an estimable and chnstian lady, passed from this world to another Sunday after noon. She h as been a great sufferer for th e past six months with a cancer, and a t last relieved from the suffering and mis eries o f this world by the silent h and of death. During h e r life she tried a num ber of remedies', and now since all have M e d we are deeply and sorrowfully im- jpressed with the tru th o f our quotation. H e r life was one o f usefulness and piety. S h e was always helping th e sick and alle viating the wants of the poor and desti tu te. B y them, but n o t by them alone, vrili her presence h ere below be missed, as she vacates a chair in the home circle th a t none o ther can fill. W e commend th e disconsolate to H im who is g iver o f all good. “ B a rth has no sorrow t h a t Heaven can not heal.” ------ ^The funeral obsequies will take place on Thursday, at 11 o’clock, at th e house. __ The Pompey correspondent of the S y racu ^ Journal has the following “ The event which h as been m ost promi nent during the week was the celebration o f the twenty-fifth marriage anniversary o f Rev. and Mrs. P e trie last evening. The parsonage was filled to its utm o st capacity, and the good cheer and kind feeling manifested could not have been otherwise than m o st highly gratifying to M r. Petrie as the evidence t h a t he is thoroughly appreciated by his people. I t was a very pleasant feature to see so zaauy members u f the other churches unite in the kind wishes and cordial con- fratuIaUons o f the occasion. The pres- jients were beautiful, elaborate and abun d a n t, and w ith such a salver lining we should not be surprised if our pastor should take a “ new departure” and en ter upon his work w ith increasing vigor and success, Mr. P e trie responded from a full h e a rt to this h e a rty demonstration, invoking Heaven’s b est blessings upon all, hi* guests, and th a t with the cordiality^ now manifest they m ight travel happily together in the sam edhristian pilgrimage. ilh fa lany August 2. The State scow will take their hose carriage, and the company will probably go on the steamer, W. I., Skin- — Gihe steamer W m. 1. Skinner will ran from this place to Mohawk, the 4th. I t has been repaired and it now can ac commodate several hundred passengers. She will start for Mohawk at 9 o’clock, A. M, Fare b o th ways, only 25 cents. — Rev. Dr. Newman, of Washington, will give a lecture in this place, Friday evening, Ju ly .2Qth, on “ The Origin, Progress and Fall of the Turkish Em p ire, prophetically announced.” The subject indicates t h a t t h e lecture will be b o th in teresting and instructive. — The regular monthly parade o f the fire departm ent o f this village, took place last Saturday afternoon. I t was the first appearance of No. 3 since they received their new steamer, and the members of th a t company gave a reception to the other fire companies, a t their engine house. It was quite an affair, and the boys h a d a good tim e . — A Seredd correspondent says: The general conversation among our citizens is the failure of the firm of H. Andrews & C o ., carriage dealers. A s i t w a s for some time expected th a t the above firm would fail, it was hardly supposed th a t our merchants would have any accounts against any of its members. N everthe less there are many of them, also individ uals who have debts against them . The style i n w h ich the ju n io r m e m b e r of the firm h as been living, and a fast horse, it is said, has helped to cripple the firm. H . A n d rew s and S. N . A n d rew s have left town. A brother-in-law of the latter is settling up the business of the firm. Fulmer Creek Valley and Vi cinity. — Now is the season for shortberry straw cake. — C. Shoemaker, Esq., has been re moved to Mohawk. W e hope the change will be beneficial. — T h e youngj people held a dance or housewarming at Simeon Days’ a few evenings-since. — The Protestant M ethodist h eld their quarterly meeting, Sabbath, at Paine’s Hollow. Also their baptismal services are at Schuyler n e x t Sabbath. — D. D- Shoemaker, Esq., is erecting a fine barn on the old site. When it is completed it will be a great improvement on anything around of the kind. — The prayer meetings are largely at tended. Wheeloek and Maxwell vis ited our school last week. W e trust we as teachers may profit by the wise sug gestions of Com. W e hear the festival at Denison’s Corners was one of the most enjoyable affairs o f t h e season. T h e proceeds w e re for the benefit o f Rev. J u lian Ackler, a gentleman of talent and ability. — T h ^ spelling school or exhibition a t school house was interesting and p ro fitable. The young people and children who p articipated reflected credit to them selves. Johnson as District Deputy Grand Mas ter of the 14th Masonic District. Mr. Johnson is a faithful and efficient officer. Those who admire dogs had a good opportunity of seeing two specimens of the St. Elmo breed last W ednesday.— They are owned by a man in *West Win field. One of them took the first prize a t th e C e n tennial la s t season, an d its owner refused $250 for it. — The people of the school district over the river have bought of Roche & Giblin coal enough to last them five years. Owing to the low price of coal just now, we think their investm ent wffi not prove a loss. — A grand concert will he given by the pupils of Miss A. M. Sikes, assisted by Messrs. Ap. Haddock and Danforth, of Utica, at Maben’s Opera House, Tuesday evening, July 10. A rare treat is ex pected. _ ________ M o l i a w k . Charles Brown has sold his meat m arket to Valentine Brown. — Cottage service Tuesday evening, at the residence of Mrs. Stillwill. — Rev. John Lansing was ordained and installed pastor of the Reformed Church last Wednesday evening. — A fter the cottage service a t Varley Hall last week, M r. A . W . Hazlehurst. behalf of the congregation, presented Rev- Mr. W alker with $101.67, the pro ceeds of the recent festival held by the ladies o f the mission. — D. R, Baldwin, bar keeper of the Mohawk Valley Hotel, is winning favor with the people of this place, and with the inany visitors who come to this beau tiful village. This hotel is fortunate in securing Ms services. — The celebration about to be held here promises to be a grand display. I t will probably excel all demonstrations of the kind ever held in Mohawk or in snr* rounding villages. The Ilion fire de partm e n t and band will be out in full display. The Frankfort fire departm ent and band will ako join in the parade. Two fire companies of Little Falls have been invited, and will also attend, ac companied by the St. Johnsville brass band. The’ Herkim er fire department will be present in full force. O u r own fire department will turn out and make every effort to give their friends of the visiting companies a grand reception. A fair day will insure one o f the most imposing displays of firemen ever assem bled ‘in this county. A first-class cele bration is anticipated, as the committee of arrangements h ave spared no effort to make it a success. There will be a grand parade in the forenoon, a parade of the Mohawk Indians in the afternoon, and in the evening there will be a grand display of fireworks. Court Proceedings. Tuesday, June 20th, Justice Hardin held an adjourned Special Term in this village, for the purpose of disposing of the causes on the calendar for J u n e 4th. N o . 1, A n n a B . D a g e r, a d m inistratrix, &e., of Benjamin Dager vs. Levi Ausman id wife, Ezra Graves, Executor, and E lizabeth J . H a r v e y , e x e c u trix, o f C h arles Spinner and John D. Spinner. The ac tion was b rought to foreclose a mortgage given by Levi Ausman. The defendant claimed th a t i t had been paid in full by Charles Spinner. The Court allowed a payment of $250 on the mortgage and gave plaintiff judgm ent for the balance. D. D. W alrath, for plaintiff; J . A. Steele for defendants. No. 4, Elijah H. M o rse vs. John P. Harvey, -and others. This action was brought by plaintiff, who keeps a marble shop a t Mohawk, to have a deed declared mortgage. Decision reversed. T. Rich- ardson for plaintiff; W . T. Loomis and H. Olay Hall, for defendant. N o . 5, P e t e r A . Conyne an d H iram McChesney. The farm of Leyenus De- vendorf was sold under a mortgage fore closure in J u n e , . 1876. There was a sur plus on the sale which was claimed by Stewart L. Devendorf, son of Levenus, by virtue of a mortgage for $2,500, given to him by Leyenus for services performed on the farm. The plaintiff who also held m o rtgage givea by L e v e n u s D e v e n d o rf, brought this action to set aside the m ert- gage to Stewart as fraudulent. The Court held th a t the mortgage was a valid lien on th e surp lu s to th e ex ten t o f $1300. W. T. Loomis and G, W . Smith, for plaintiffs; Mills & Palm er for defendant. No. 10, M argaret Spedding vs. George Broomhall, and others. This action was brought to set aside an assignment of a mortgage by plaintiff to defendants. The Court held th a t Sayer Spedding should have been made a defendant. The plain tiff was allowed to amend, and the cause was referred to \William Kernan. J . A. & A. B. Steele for p laintiff; A.
