Some o f o u r villagers were somewhat startled Saturday, R. sr., by th e cry, “ slop thief,” and the spectacle of said thief running through the s treet with man in fall ehase. I t appears th a t three tram p s who had-been about, went into a shoe store, and one o f them after having put on a pair of boots, suddenly left and' ran. Prom Our Special Correspondent.' Last Thursday was the happy day. 'Never has this village seen a more au spicious demonstration. All joined with j :a feeling o f ju s t pride on the occasion of dedicating our new school building. W e draw new hope from this achievement. O u r pulses heat with joy. .The commemoration of this enterprise wrought by the people’s industry, and an enlightened spirit of adlvancemept, will ever be remembered by those present. This is one o f the silent revelations Which drives ignorance to the wall, and oi»ens the way to refinement and- wisdom. We may say th a t th'e free school system is the controlling m ater pf the age, which is lifting us into a clearer atmosphere, and will im p art an enlargement to the human mind in this locality, as i t has done elsewhere. This will be the equiv: lent for o ur labor. A progressive public School system is as necessary in these days as is th e practise o£ economy and justice in our homes. As citizens whose interests are invited by common ties, have we joined to en courage the s tudy of science and letters. The president’s address was followed by mem bers of the school singing in, coD«»rt. tinder the able tutorage of Miss Byde, the musical d epartm ent o f o u r school will be an im p o rtant feature. She is scholar ly in her musical attainments, and will be found a valuable acquisition to the social. circles of our town. Renyon recited a very finely written poem, entitled, “ Gloria Mnndi.” Mr. Kenyon is a yeiy fine 'writer o f the contemplarive style, and as a young p o et, his productions are very meritorious. The address by Prof. A . McMillen, su perintendent o f schools, Utica, was o f a historic n ature, evinced a close student o f the early history of our valley, its rise and progress. The disadvantages and advantages of the old and new were well depicted. Mr. El. H . Christie, o f H e r kimer, although he appeared fftK no elaborate address, his remarks were lis tened to very attentively, and showed much practical experience in the manage m ent o f schools. O u r young townsman, Frank B . Parkhurst, Esfl., who h as d«- Ih® voted h im self to oratory of late, and with. fine success, as the aadiience attested to by the merited applause he received, Mr. P a rkhurst is one o f our m o st able writers, and his rendering is always in accord with his productions. Prof. J . S. Sm ith favored tis with an original pro duction, written in jythm . I t was o f a comique n ature and elicited repeated ap plause from h is hearers. By a unanimous request h e repeated h is production in th e evening. The exercises were now adfourned un til evening, the afternoon’s program be ing exhansted. Long before the hour appointed for re-opening, the principal’s room in the second story was filled to overflowing. The evening’s p rogram was* opened by several finely executed airs from Gates’ Band, Charies F.- Whcelock, school commissioner, gave a fine extem poraneous address, reflecting a cultured ^ i n d . H e is a gradnate o f Cornell, and a worthy young man. O n r new principal, J . W . Barris, deliv ered a scholarly address, well adapted to the occasion. Mr. Barris’ appearance u p on the s tage is in h is favor. O f a pleasing oonutenance, he h i s a n& tnnl grace and finish o f g esture t h a t corresponds. The address by E li Smith, Esq., was good. He is a young mart ofindUstry and worth, and h as by diligent study and patient la bor acquired a cultured mind, surpriring as i t is varied. J.* H . J .
