I. —Sunday evening last,' a young girl by the name of Catharine Quigley was murdered near, the village o f Jamaica, Queens co. She was about 15 years of age, and had that afternoon gone to-see some friends residing in the town of Flushing. After making her visit she left—a little before dark—for the pur pose of returning to Jamaica!, Not re turning home that evening, immediate search was made for her ; and on Mon day afternoon her'body was found fa a pond close by the roadside. Upon her face were marks of severe violence, there being several deep, cuts on differ ent parts of her face. Her person flad been violated. Yesterday a corpner|§ inquest was held, without eiicitins: any facta tendhig to connect ,any person with the outrage. Xk’o of fhe witness es who were examined, and who are strongly suspected'of having been con cerned in the outrage, testified that they passqd a girl, corresponding in size and dress, with that of the deceased, in the immediate vicinity of the pond,, and at about |.he time she must have . been murdered. One of them stated that he diet not know the girl i but bis com panion stestified that the other ope spoke to him about the girl, and gave him her name. Both say that the ,girl was going towards Jamaica. One of these men assisted in getting the body from the pondi and upon .being,asked how he supposed she was killed, an swered that heJhouglit had been run over by a wagon they had met on ’the road; and then being, asked how hfr accounted for her bein^ found in the pond, said the persons .infille wagon -mnst bav,e thrown her' in. The two witnessed above referred to are Irisli- men, and about 21 years o f age.
