Entering tho navjr when promotion depended more upon merit than ppon interest, he passed through all tho grades of oflScerhood, earning each b hard service, until he attained the highei honors of his profession. His first decided Jaurels were won in taking Fort Edward, Martinique. He afterwards figured as a volunteer in tho War of the Peninsula, where he distinguished himself by his bravery and strategic skill. In 1811, he was engaged in the expedition fitted out in Sicily ; captured the Island of Ponza; And was invested with an order by tho K ing of Naples. Kesigning bis command in the BrUish navy be entered tbe service of tbe King of Portugal, where be served with distinction for several years. Eelurn- iing to England, he resumed active sor>ice mtd bore a prominent part in the proceod- -Ings against Meliamot Air and Ibrahim Pasha upon tho coast of Syria. For this 'fiorvico he was knighted, while 'tokens of regard wore showorod upon liim by tho fiovovoigns of other Powers. Retiring froi the navy he entered Parliament, where he Aspoused the W h ig cause, and made stren uous efforts to tDcreasQ the efficiency o f the navy. H e was, moreover, the author of : several popular works,among others, “The WaJ! in .Syria.” lie was one of the most persisleot of alarmists, and principally de voted himself for the last few years of his life to getting up panics. Among his last and most favorite hc/bbies was that of a French invasion, which he rode without cessation.
