W e saw hundreds of acres light, which we use as a Jev* then dig under one o f the main sidori oots, and hitch a v eiy heavy chain around it, and the other end of tlie chain around the lov er', then hitch a good span o f horses to the other end, and drive around the stump un til it is twisted out. If there are no side- roots, we hitch around the body of the stump b)^ wbat is called a logging bitch ; but in this case tbe chain must be a strong one.—^Bural. devoted to this vuluble object; but sor ry to say, for tbe most part, vvith only half its legitimate purposes, that of its seed, in view by tbe cultivators. Seed is the only object for which the mass of tbe crop is p;odnced. For the. want of propter machi nery to dress it, tbe lint is thrown away, and rotted in the *baru-yards. however, are beginning to 1 into the fli M a e lunes, w o rk th e ir w a y e flax-growing country, being already established in and about Springfield, in the Mad liiver valley.— W hen machines of the right kind are per manently established, we see no reason why fiax will not become a continual crop in the Western States, north of tbe Oliio River, as hemp is at tbe south of it. It is an ex cellent cropj for a rotation, leaving the inlv, it i lusliels t the ceral grains. As now cultivafod, for seed 01 s(iwn at the rate of one to two hi the acre, according to the quality of the ground ; too thin ibr good lint. It grows h i g h and b r a n c liiug, and on go o d land, y ie ld s tw e lve to fouiteeu bushels p e r acre. 'Jjic cultivation is simple. A single plow in g on m e llow , free soils, a dressing w ith the ImiToiv, then sowing, and a brushing in of the seed, is sufficient. W h en the crop is matured, it is mowed, or cradled, if very stout. Mowing, liowever, is the usual way of cutting. After drying on the ground, it i.s carefully bound into bundles, and the seed whipped out by band-boaters. There are large fields of the W liite, or t 'anary fiax in growth. It is somewhat lar ger than the common flax, and thought hy its cultivators to give a greater yield of seed, \We saw-specimens of stalks (or straw) just ja'cvious to blooming, Avldch were tliroe and a lialf feet long, a fair sample of the whole held. The flax seed of Ohio, Indiana, Illi nois, must be worth millions dollars the cur rent year, an every field we saw was of the the seed ; the oil finds a ready m.arket in the Eastern States, and thousands of tons of the cake are transported to tliis city for shipment to England. It sells at the mills where manufactured, according as they £taud Contiguous to canal and railway com munication, at ten to fifteen dollars a ton. The mills have paid for seed the jiast two or three years,’ $1 25 to $1 50 per bushel. When the sale and preparlion of the lint shall become an important object in flax cul tivation, as by the introduction of pa-oi)er dressing-machinos, wc trust it will bo, the crop will be much more profitable. The yield of seed wili be less, as it imist bo thicker sown to give a finer fibre. It may Jiave to be somewhat earlier pulled, or cm jtnd a less projiiortiou of tlm sued may bo marketable. The cultivation may have to he somewhat nicor, The method of har- Tcsting will be more expensive, as the crop must be pulled, or cut close to the ground, jis with hemp ; but all these increased la- Imrs and expenses will bq doubly compen sated by the sale of the lint, which yields some four Imndred pounds to the aero of Well-dressed flax, worth six to eight dollars the hundred, Tn Trelanri tUo average is athoiit two tons of straw per acre, which yields about five hundred pounds of dress ed flax. It is a matter of surpiise that, in a coun try where cotton and hemp have arrived, years ago. at an advanced state o f improve ment in their nmmifnctiiro, flax, an equally valuuhlq article, in the extent to which It is used, should be so far behind, The flax- emtton, about which so much was said a few years since, for linen fabrics, proved a fidlure; for, bji shorting its fibre, the desir- -able characteristics of the linen article was ?ost. That could be spun on cotton machi nery, or something near like it, hnfc flax proper, requires manipulations of its own, W ith a broad growth of the article aim our fanners, and efiicient machines to h r . .and dross it into marketable shape, we have little doidjt that it .will afford a profltahlo fifaple of mamifacture, even into many arti cles where hemp is now used, Xfor all the coarse, heavj' purposes, hemp, as notv, must h.5 required, its great length of fibre afford ing ft Strength that flax is tine(|ual to; hut ef We ^auuot go into the manufacture of ineliiiaM S , CQurae o n e s, w ith t h r e a d s , tw ines, <ords, and various articles, may be made in this country,-of great consumption among 4)ur own people and trades, and building up $or their fabrication perpianeut establish ments, adds largely to our wealth and re sources, It is perhaim unknown to many of oitr readers, that tbe onion is one of the most >H 0 trf 0 u 8 of roots, containing when firom twenty-five to thirty per m ' ofgliiton , Jt is'ft great staple of life fip»m mA ^ovtn$nl ‘Onions are not a rel ish memly to the Bpanlards, for they help to sustain hSftstfsngth, and Add x ^ w o m d s u g g e s t , te of nourishment wmohhis smi' pie meal supplies, WiiftAr O aqu ,-—’A* the crop in this Btfttft is beginning to show itself in marke;, tb# done by the Weevil is found to h#,not so great as was reportedi Tim CwnawMo,—A correspondent of the Sfiw Vork: Tribune says that a friend, ^ e r ^vijjg fried many ineffcctuftl remedies for ib§- mroulh, mixed sulphur and lard with ft liitJe Iboteh snuff) ftnd rubbed it freely on the body .#nd branches of the tree,-* a«ri«lio hftd already pommeneed their work at the time, hut not relishing the dy is worth trying.
