She went from Boston out to Albuquerque to Tisit hor alster , who wan the wife of a banker there. She went up in the mountains ou a pleasure excursion a year ago last summer , ami on the tri p -visited our camp for two or three days. When the miners found out she was there , they came in from overy direction to see her , and she expressed n desire to livo there. The camp grew and several miners with families came in last year. Wo had no teacher , and the boys got me to write for the Boston g irl. \ Well , she came up to the camp, anil nbout one hnndred miners subscribed $1.50 a month oach to pay her for teaching the school. Sho was paid in this way until re- cently, when thero was in tbe camp enoug h children to organize tho school under the Territorial laws. Now she is paid out of the Territory treasury. She seems to enjoy the wild mountain life very much. Her prin- ci pal amusement is riding on horseback. When she camo there she had never been in a saddle. The young school teacher ia greatly admired aud profoundly respected b y the miners , and sho is certainly a bri g ht ray of sunshine in that camp. \ — St. Louis Globe-Democrat. I Housekeeping a JVanbionable Crtuie. Housekeep ing as an accomplishment has at last become fashionable. The male edi- tors who have been firing huge chunks of advice at women on tho nocossity of know- ing bow to keep house , if thoy knew noth- ing else, havo nt last won tbe day. At least tbo trend is in thoir favor , whether their dreary columns hel ped to bring it about or not. Now York ladies flock to cooking schools as enthusiastically as they once flocked to danoing schools. A daug hter of Ex-Governor Smith , of Vermont , won tha first prize over ei ght competitors at the cooking exhibition nt St. Albans. In this city thousands of ladies do their marketing in person where hundreds only did it ten years ago. The markets are full of them on certain mornings , and the splendid up town grocery Btores arrange their goods attrac- tivel y to please their artistio eyes. —New Tork Press. A Scliooliua'an. Am onu lliu Miners. The mountaineer of Northern Georg ia is a very different character from the or.liuary Southerner of the lower clasB. Tbe latter, as a rule , speaks with a strong negro accent , but the mountaineers of this part of the country have nothing of that accent. There are very few negroes in this portion of tbo country. Tho latter prefer tho low coun- tries to the mountains , as a rule. Tho mountaineers are not very anxious to work , but when they do work it is with a will. They are extremel y honest , or rather would be if the manufacture aud salo of illicit whiskey were strictly honest. They till the soil in an easy-going sort of a way, ond are sontcnted with tho light crops they secure. They live princi pally upon coarso bacon and roug h bread and hominy. Few other arti- cles of food are ever seen on their tables. Tbey do not seem to care for variety in the way of food. They are very fond of coffee , but care nothing for tea. Thoir houses are small oue story affairs and rarely have more than two rooms. The outside world -nan always be seen from the inside of these houses , thanks to tho amp le ohinks in the walls and ceilings. The temperature of the housea ia quite comfortable during the short summer ni g hts , but is intensely cold at times during tbe winter. During tho .old spells , which do not last long, fortunatel y, the peop le suffer greatl y. Mauy of the young women nre quite handsome , and a good pro- portion of the men are fine specimens of manhood. Tho mon take as a rule little in- terest in national politics. Tho feeling in regard to local politics , however , runs quit* Ui n 'h at Unit- —.*>. . IttiUr, llie Isntifflifrras Independent. Would it not he wiser far to induce young girls in thousands of happy, prosperous homes to make amp le provision for any and all emergencies tbat the future may ha-u in store for them ? Could a belter use be found for some of the yeifrs that intervene between the time a g irl leaves school ansl the time she may reusonabl y hope to marry ? The field for womnn ' s work has been opened up of late years in so runny different directions thnt a vocntiou can easil y bo found , outside the profession of teaching, (hat will be quite as congenial to refined tastes , and consider- abl y more lucrative. Book-keep ing, type- writing, telegrap hy, stenograp hy, engrav- ing, dentistry, medicine , nursing, and a dozen other occupations mi ght he men- tioned. Then , too , industrial schools mi ght be established , where the daughters of wealth y parents could bo trained in tho practical details of any particular industry f jr which they displayed a special aptitude. ¦ If * .t is not beneath the sons and daughters of a monarch to Icaru a trade , it ought not to be beneath the sons and daug ht ers of re- publican America to emulate their good ex. amp le , provi ded they possess the renuiiito ability to do so. —Centur y . -Houn—ilneers of Northern <*cor _ tn* An avenue of well grown tree*, by tint roadside makes a farm vastly more ntti*ac> tlve , and costs littlo except the labor of set- ting. On hi g h ground the sugar map lo thus set will make a sugar grove after a few years. On lowlands tho elm is a handsome treo, but its roots extend far into tho fields , nud are very likely to get into underdrnins when tbe roadside is drained , as it should always be. After a cow hns dropped her calf , her sys- tem iB always more or less feverish and tlie milk correspouding l y intlienlthf.il. It is etrong l y laxative , and therefore exactl y fitted to the requirements of the l'onug calf for which nature desi gned it. But it i.s not sals to feed it to older stock , except with great caution. It will causo nbortion in sow? heavy with p i*?, though theso aro the ones that a ihoug htlcss farmer mi ght first thiuV of favoring with it. Tho Colorado potato beetle is mi gratory to a limited extent; but it never came from its orig inal home except as it was brought by railroads or otherwise iu packages of potatoes. Somo have thus even been car- ried to Europo in times when we sent pota- toes abroad. Onco in a nei ghborhood it is eehlom that any field escapes iu visitations. If the beetles are few in number , a field at a distance from any where potatoes were grown last yenr , and p lanted very late , sometimes escapes. But it is not safe anywhere to rely on this. Destroy ing the beetles or poison- ing their Inrvio aro tho ouly sure woyo to save the crop. That there is such a disease of the pcajU tree as yellows is unfortunatel y too well nt- J. 'Sted. Still , much that passes for yellows is due to other causes—poverty of soil and winter killing of the previous year ' s growth. In any kind of treo the vjithering or d ying out of dead branches will in time affect its vitality. The app le is a great deal hardier anil stronger tree thnn the peach , but even ou this a dead limb is , if not S j ' seedily re- moved , soon followed by others , until the tree dies . In many casea other causes of peach trees dying are ascribod to yellows ; not infrequently the cause will be found near the root iu nn attack from the borer. In olden times sowing land with salt was a sy mbol of its desolation . In large enoug h quantities it will destroy every trace of vege- tation. Even those p lants which , like as- pnragus , aro natural lovers of salt , can have too much of a dose , hut after a time heavily salted laud recovers ita fertility, and may even he tho better for this treatment. Wo have heard of farmers who , b y mistake , app lied too much salt to wheat ; but tbey seeded the following spring, aud fo. - several years thereafter the field that bad been over- salted produced enormous crops ol liny. The tendency of salt is to mako the soil moist aud cool. It is , therefore , excellent for crops that require theso conditions. The only remed y known for tho black knot in cherry t rees is to cut off tho limbs below the enlargements aa soon as they ap- pear , and burn them at once. By examin- ing tho trees carefull y every few days , and using the knifo ou nil the limbs and twi gs wbich -ihow si gns of being affected , the trees may be kept in thrift y condition. It is safest to cut off a few inches of sound wood below the knot , so as to be sure that nil of tho diseased portions aro removod. When the knot appears upon the bod y of the treo or on the main limbs near the trunk , cut away every vcsli go of tho diseased wood wiU. o sharp knife or draw shave , app ly to the wound a dressing of grafting wax , and cover with a cloth. The onl y habitation for two miles either way was tho little cabin on the side hill , in ivhic ' a lived the switchman aud his wife , nnd the forest was as dense us the day Columbus discovered America. A. crowd ot lis was sitting on the rocks beside the train , Bmok. ing and talking nud wailing, when n man suddenl y rose up and exclaimed : \Every bod y listen! That' s the bay of n bloo.lhound [\ All rose up aud listened. \O»*!ow!\ We beard it nfar off , but pretty soon the ominous sounds came p lainer and nearer , nnsl the man who had first upokeu pulled his revolver and shouted i \ S prend out , nil of you , and make the lino ss long as you can! The dogs are tomiug this way, aud a convict or ni gger ia in front of them!\ Moro men came out of tho cars , the line was iirnwn out nnlil it was ft quarter ot a mile long, and then wo waited again. Not for long, however. Not more than three minntes had passed wheu n stalwart black man , his clolhcB torn nnd tattered , with blood on hir . ' ace nnd bauds, camo running throug h the woods. He was ri g ht upon th* line before he discovered us , and when two or threo men covered hira with their revol- vers he threw up his hands. \Owl owl\ bellowed tbo hounds , and next moment three great hounds rushed up, saw that tho fug itive was captured and lay down to pont and rest. Two minutes moro brought a dozen horsemen. Not ten words wero spoken. A rope was produced nnd flung over a limb , the noose dropped over the negro ' s head , and as seven or ei g ht men run him up until his tot-t were two feet above the earth a dozen bullets were fired into his bod y. \ Assaulted a white woman near Birming- ham , \ exp lained the leader of tho party as his orowd was ready to gc.
