D estructive .. f ’lRE.— The village of Port Byron, Cayuga county, was visited with a destructive fire on Thursday evening ef last week, -It originated in the extensive tannery of A Tupper Esq., which was en tirely consumed, together with its contents, •consisting of a large quantity of leather in a finished aud unfinished state. The grist mill owned by the Beach estate, the me thine and blacksmith’s shop, and carriage (factory of William Tull, and a large barn •occupied by one of the companies on tbe canal, together weth several other smaller buildings, were entirely destroyed. The loss has been*, variously estimated at from fifteen .o t we uty dhoti sand dollars. We are informed that none of the buildings destroy •ed were lusured. —-The Sun. Thousands of acres haVe already been burned over, and the ground is so very dry there is no prospect of (he fire being soon arrested. Miles of fences, a large quantity of hay, and a number of buil dings, have been destroyed. EDITOR’S NOTICE. MASQN & TUTTLE. F atal A ccident .— O u Friday, the 20th in9t., a young man Hviug in North Adams. Mass., drove two ladies out toward evening tin a buggy, with a spit ited horse. The an imal being stimulated to race with an other party, ran away, whereupon the gentleman jumped out, and the horse, after running a half a mile, was stopped by some obstacle •and the wagon overturned. Oue of the young ladies, who was thrown out at that time, walked into, a neighbouring house, where she fainted, and has since been ly ing in a dangerous state. Tbe other lady, Miss Flechei^ was found upon the ground •some distance back, where she had either jumped or beeu thrown out. She lived but •a few minutes aifter being discovered. The young man escaped without injury. The funeral of M(ss Fletcher was attended .on Sunday by a large uumber of citizens of North Adams. , T he F otatoe B light . —A New York ‘farmer has discovered that the Potato Blight is caused by Vsafolhiiiseet. He has disco vered a small green colored maget in the -cavity of tbe 'diseased ‘potatoes on his farm The disease has been on the increase for •several years and has excited great interest in Scotland, Germany, Sweden aed Rus sia. Another farmer suggests that, to pre vent the disease from spreading, the sound .'potatoes should be spread oul and dried thoroughly, before they are stored away.— He says :—“I find them in the worst state •on the wettest ground ; tbe Carter potato is the most decayed; the common round red ones, nearly as .much; and the ladies’ fin ders scarcelyjij.alj,’’— N. It is stated by a Havana correspondent of the New Orleans Tropic, that the Cuba Mining Company have discontinued their operations, from unproductiveness, and all the workmen (English^ are in prison— •cause unknown. The superintendent, Dr. Wolff, (an American/is also arrested, and I understand the A merican Consul is car rying on a correspondence in relation to it ; tire result has not transpired.
